Being a Life-long Learner

By Yourfamilysurvivalcoach @shari_brewer

It could be possibly be the teacher in me …. or maybe it’s my geeky nerdiness, but I’m stand-up-tall-proud to be a learner. I have a brain that is often in overdrive and quite frequently I find myself tangled in a sticky web of thoughts and ideas. It’s all good though, as it’s forever been this way and I quite like the challenge of attempting to make sense of it all.

Before the magic world of Google, I relied heavily on the local public library, newspapers and the badgering questioning of those who I thought had the answers, usually this was my Mum and Dad. I’m just glad they didn’t journal some of the crazy queries, plans and hair-brained schemes I came up with – that’d be much embarrassment! Seriously.

Books though usually provided the answers to my questions and then so much more on top. Lots of books.

Do you enjoy reading? I do, I LOVE it and have been a voracious reader all of my life, and by far non-fiction outweighs any other genre on my bookshelves. I especially love to learn through following the inspirational lives of others and if you read only one more book in your lifetime then this one, by George Dawson and Richard Glaubman, should be your pick.

I’d probably even consider lending you this dog-eared, much loved copy, but oddly there is a strange comfort I have in knowing it is nearby … sorry. That said, once you’ve read it you possibly won’t want to part with it either. It’s a beautifully written tribute to lifelong learning, and the joys of discovery, regardless of age and if I could put it on everyone’s bookshelf, I would.

Possibly by the time you are reading this, I’ll be southward bound, off to a 2-day learning event in Sydney where I’m all at once nervous and excited about meeting and learning from some of my favorite bloggers at DPCON13. The host of today’s #IBOT linkup, Essentially Jess, will be there and she’s one of the many learned bloggers I’m hoping to soak up some knowledge from. I’m sure that my head will be pounding with information and that I’ll be scrawling like a woman possessed in order to capture all of those ideas. (Although I do love my iGadgets, I’m firmly old school pen and paper when it comes to notes at conferences).

In yesterday’s post, I alluded to the busy-ness of some learning and thinking stuff that has stolen much of my attention over the last few weeks. I’ve been head-down, bum-up reading (of course) and devouring information – professionally for Family Survival Coach, but also personally for me, and my self growth. Over the past number years, especially in the time since ending my first marriage, I have been given so many personal learning opportunities. Not all of this learning has come easily, and at times the lessons were so difficult, giving up may have been the easier road. The School of Hard Knocks (as some may call it) has a pretty rigorous curriculum but the self-learning and development I’ve gained has been well worth it. I’ve learnt so much about myself, about others and about various ways of approaching life and her curveballs with a healthier reframe and a more positive mindset. {Insert cheer squad high-kick action right about here!}

George Dawson is right you know, Life is So Good!  It’s very good indeed!

Have you gained inspiration from a book that’s stayed with you for years?

What have YOU been learning about lately?

I’m excited about sharing my DPCON13 learning here on the site and wooohoo tomorrow and Thursday, I’ll be soaking up lots and lots of juicy blogging knowledge. Oh, and Thursday night, I’ll be in a party dress, possibly soaking up something in a glass ;)

Look out for my pics and tweets and see you when I get back!

Have a great Tuesday and if you’re a blogger, remember to link up with Jess at IBOT! It’s esstentially awesome and you can find it here -  Essentially Jess!
