“No howlers, just growlers”
Grunting Growler sounds rude, Grunting Growler sounds wrong! But what is a Growler and why would it grunt? A growler is a re-fillable bottle (see main pic above) of the swing-top Grolsch variety and “Grunting Growler” is the brainchild of Jehad Hatu who is helping establish the concept in Glasgow.
We popped along for some beer tasting at the current pop-up in the old Halt Two (beside the Halt) on Woodlands Road. West brewery have taken over both spaces and in early 2015 a restaurant will open in the current shell of what once was the Halt Two. It’s currently very reminiscent of a Berlin squat pub!
There is a choice of 4 draft beers for filling up the 2 different bottle sizes for taking away – the huge 2 liter one is £5 while the 500ml bottle is £1.50 (both ex. the cost of the beer). A bit expensive but you get what you pay for as all the beers are high quality and almost all of them we hadn’t had before.
Prices vary but it’s stuff you won’t find in too many places in Glasgow and certainly won’t find any cheaper. The beer will also keep for a good few weeks in the growlers. You can also sit in, and there are a selection of bottles & cans for drinking too. For our beer tasting session we tried the following:
Smoked Porter by Tap Out Brewery (Scotland)
A thick smokey porter, we liked it but couldn’t drink a lot of it.
Bleddyn 1075 by The Celt Experience (Wales)
Really nice but a bit too much bitterness, well that’s IPA for you.
Bayerisch Nizza Clubbier by Hans Müller (Germany)
Colour light and a bit odd looking – pink-ish, sweet but tart, light and rhubarb tasting – a bit different!
Fuzzy by The Celt Experience (Wales)
Cloudy sweet smelling sour tasting grapefruit loveliness. Mmm…
Tannen Dunkel by Hohenthanner Schlossbrauerei (Germany)
Very light dunkel in appearance. Strong caramel toffee aroma/taste. Soft sweet non-fizzy deliciousness.
Camden Unfiltered Hells by Camden Town Brewery (England)
A “hazy” lager, light, hoppy & refreshing but a bit too much of a standard lager for our exotic palates!
Blond by Pilot (Scotland)
A really tasty, fruity tropical blonde ale.
We also took some Beavertown Quelle fry hopped saison, Anderson Valley El Steinber and Fourpure American Brown up the road too. The beers are ever changing so we will be back for a top-up soon…
