The first time I read Beautiful Creatures, I didn’t really enjoy it, for some reason I didn’t connect well with the characters. I had no desire to read any more book in the series but, when I first saw the trailer for the movie, I felt like I was seeing the story in a whole new light. I loved the imagery and I’m a big fan of a lot of the cast. So, a few weeks ago Amanda and I decided to watch the movie and here is the run down.
I enjoyed the movie, I didn’t find myself on the edge of my seat, but I really connected more with the movie then I did with the book. I’ve always been a sucker for movies set in the deep south. I love the scenic backdrops and the way the atmosphere is almost visually humid, I love the deep history that has to be present. The cast did an incredible job, I felt they brought the characters to life in an impressive way.
I think every person who reads the book first, goes into a movie adaptation with a certain sense of dread, you can’t help but wonder ” How are they going to muck up my beloved book?”. Its sensible to understand that there will be changes, obviously its called an adaptation for a reason but there were some pretty significant differences in the movie version of Beautiful Creatures. I wanted to just highlight a few, but beware, these are spoiliers!
- They completely left out Marian, Ethan’s mother’s best friend and “Keeper” of Caster books and secrets. The rolled her character in with Ammas.
-We never meet Ethans dad, and he is only vaguely mentioned.
-In the movie, Lena casts a spell on Ethan to forget her, so if she goes dark he wont be effected.
-Ethan’s death, is totally rewritten!

Even with all the changes, I still preferred the movie. Unfortunately, based off the box office sales, I thinks it’s doubtful there will be another movie. The movie cost 60 million to make and only made 58 million, those numbers don’t scream box office hit. Hopefully, its makes up the difference with sales when its release on blue ray.
What did you think of the movie? Would you like to see more Beautiful Creatures films?
