I live in a beautiful historic market town, Barnard Castle in Teesdale, County Durham. The town is named after the castle. It is the main settlement in the Teesdale area, and is a popular tourist destination.

The castle is set on a high rock above the River Tees, Barnard Castle takes its name from its 12th century founder, Bernard de Balliol. It was later developed by the Beauchamp family and then passed into the hands of Richard III.

As a child I would look in amazement at our castle, such a beautiful and majestic building to a young child’s eyes.

As a young child I would be excited to go inside and run and find all the hiding places and imagine I was a princess trapped in a dungeon.

As a teen I would hang around outside of the castle and yes even climbed to sit on one of the high walls. It was our castle, it was something we were proud of and still are to this day.

Sadly my own children are not too impressed with it and why should they be?

It’s falling down before their very eyes.

Our once historic and much loved castle is not only an eye soar but a danger.

Barnard Castle Crumbles; Who Is Responsible?

The problem we face as a town is that nobody is willing to accept responsibility for it.

While they argue, Barnard Castle walls are braking and crumbling.

A friend of mine who will also be known to me as Funkle  who is also passionate about our town and more importantly at this time our beloved castle, made the following video to highlight the problem and I hope we as a community will join forces and demand our castle to be saved.

What will it take for action to be taken?

Will  it take for someone to be badly hurt before anyone stands up and takes responsibility?

How many tourists will see Barnard Castle for its beauty when they enter it or see a rubble site?

If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them.

If your from our local area please share the video.
