Back to School

By Makemeupmandy @mandywebb28

This year, my little one just started preschool. Like any jittery worry-wart of a mom (are there any others out there or am I alone in this one?), I had countless hesitations. Is she too young? She only just turned 3 last week. Will she cope? She will, no doubt, be the tiniest one in a world of 4 and 5 year olds. Will she be ok?

Turns out my worries were completed unfounded. During the orientation a couple of months ago, I had the nagging feeling that she was too young, too little. But my oh my, how much can a child grow and mature within a short couple of months? She’s so independent now, she washes her hands on her own, tells me she needs to get dressed for school, wants to carry her own bag etc. This morning, she even said to me “Mummy, you need to say bye and go. I need to go play.” That definitely got a few big laughs from the teachers and me.

For our morning school routine, the detangling hair battle is definitely the most time consuming one. This little girl has extremely fine, frizzy hair and what really helps is this Tangle Teezer Magic Flowerpot. See, I own 2 ‘adult’ Tangle Teezers and I blame it on being perpetually busy/distracted by this and that, it just never occurred to me to use it on the little one. This kids version just makes it even cuter. We use it on wet hair (it works on dry hair great too) and the base of the brush acts as a storage box for clips and hair ties. Easy peasy, very cute, looks pretty on the bedside table and the little one loves that we get to use it in our morning routine now.

Another ingenious creation that I think can really help with back-to-school jitters for the littlies is this Kimochis Nesting Heart. It’s essentially made up of 2 adorable plush hearts – one is a detachable smaller heart within a larger ‘holding’ heart.

Basically, you let your child take the removable one with them and keep the outer heart with you while they are in school, creating the feeling of being connected despite the physical distance. I think it’s a wonderful idea and I can see how it can help to soothe little ones, especially by giving them a physical symbol that they can see and touch. I also love that this comes with a list of ‘heartfelt rituals’ and tips for communicating from the heart. Very, very useful indeed. We haven’t had the opportunity to use this one yet and I guess there is no need to at the moment but I would definitely recommend it to friends who are looking for some soothing solutions to combat the school jitters.
