Hirsh Goldberg, a former press secretary to a Maryland governor and author of several books, said he chose April 30 because the first day of the month, April Fools Day, celebrates lying, so he wanted to end the month with a focus on honesty. During his research, Goldberg found that individuals lie up to 200 times a day, including white lies, lying by omission and fudging the truth. Source

Great Horned OwlsMinerva released into the Wild
-- On January 22, 2004, a great horned owl named Minerva was found starving on a fence. She had cataracts that prevented her from hunting for food. Veterinarians surgically removed the cataracts and implanted new artificial lenses. After her recuperation time, Minerva was released back into the wild on April 30, 2004. Source

-- By a treaty signed on Apr. 30, 1803, the United States purchased from France the Louisiana Territory, more than 2 million sq km (800,000 sq mi) of land extending from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. The price was 60 million francs, about $15 million; $11,250,000 was to be paid directly, with the balance to be covered by the assumption by the United States of French debts to American citizens. Submarines Up CloseFirst Modern Submarine Built
-- Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) made sketches of a submarine and William Bourne, a British mathematician, drew plans for a submarine in 1578. But it was only in 1620 that Cornelius van Drebbel, a Dutch inventor, managed to build a submarine. The first submarine used for military purposes was built in 1776 by David Bushnell (1742-1824) of the US. Two rival inventors from the US developed the first true submarines in the 1890s. Source
