On April 10, 2012, PR Newswire published a press release announcing that D-Link has produced a new, low-priced alternative to it’s upscale Boxee Box streaming media player. Aptly named MovieNite, this device can enable consumers to begin streaming Netflix movies, VUDU movies via rental or purchase, YouTube, Pandora, and Picasa. Priced at under $60, this is a great way for anyone to get their feet wet in streaming.
D-Link’s Director of Consumer Products, Ken Loyd, says “We are committed to delivering customers a unique and user-friendly viewing experience, and MovieNite complements D-Link’s media player solutions, offering an effortless way for people to enjoy their digital content on a big screen at a great value. We are very excited to work with Walmart to bring this family-friendly viewing experience to consumers. Whether it’s streaming new releases the same day they come out on DVD with VUDU, or streaming the perfect music list for your party, MovieNite offers high-definition picture quality and high-quality sound all in one convenient device.”
D-Link’s high-end streaming media player, Boxee, definitely offers a lot more functionality similar to what Smart TV technology is expected to provide, including social media capabilities and web browsing, inching it’s price point up near $200. But if all you want to do is stream, MovieNite is a great alternative. Roku does not support Vudu, but both MovieNite and Boxee do.
You’ll want to determine which sources best fit your needs by comparing online media, and make sure you purchase the corresponding device that gives you the most choice for its value.
