Anime Review: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Seasons 1, 2 & 3

"No matter how many people you may lose, you have no choice but to go on living - no matter how devastating the blows may be."

- Tanjiro Kamado

I had a rough year in 2021. I was able to get through the year, though, because to Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. You ask how? Well, the 26-episode first season provides everything I needed to temporarily escape reality, including breathtaking swordfights, superhuman abilities, a ton of passion, and even a good amount of humor.

Let me introduce you to Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba if you're new to this.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Manga

Japanese manga series "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba" (Kimetsu no Yaiba, "Blade of Demon Destruction") is created by Koyoharu Gotouge. From February 2016 to May 2020, it was serialized in Shueisha's shunen manga magazine Weekly Shnen Jump, and its chapters were collected in 23 tankbon volumes. Viz Media and Shueisha both released it concurrently on their Manga Plus platforms in English. It centers on teenage Tanjiro Kamado, who aspires to become a Demon Slayer after witnessing the murder of his family and the transformation of his younger sister, Nezuko, into a demon.

Anime

The release date now varies depending on where you are. I believe the anime first became available on Netflix Philippines in September 2021.

From April to September 2019, Ufotable's translation of the manga was broadcast on television in a 26-episode anime series. The highest-grossing anime film and Japanese film of all time, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train, was released in October 2020. The anime series had a second season that ran for 18 episodes from October 2021 to February 2022. It had one original episode, recut the Mugen Train movie into six episodes, and then aired 11 episodes to cover the "Entertainment District" manga arc.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - To the Swordsmith Village, a compilation movie, was released in February 2023. The "Swordsmith Village" storyline was covered in a third season that ran from April to June 2023. It has been revealed that a fourth season will focus on the "Hashira Training" arc.

I am aware that there is a lot you need to see to catch up on the story. But you still have time because season 4 is not yet available. And I can tell you that you will like Demon Slayer from beginning to end due to the plot and level of animation. So, below is a brief description and review of each season.

The Reviews

SEASON 1
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
Tanjiro Kamado, Unwavering Resolve Arc

Release year: 2019
After a demon attack leaves his family slain and his sister cursed, Tanjiro embarks upon a perilous journey to find a cure and avenge those he's lost.

Although the first season is only the beginning, it marks a significant turning point for both the audience and the character. You'll want to follow Tanjiro on his journey after what happened to him. Each and every person's heart will be touched by the intensity of Season 1. Of course you shouldn't miss the first season.

FILM
Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train

Release year: 2020
With Kyojuro Rengoku, Tanjiro and the others board the Mugen Train to face a demon who traps his victims in dreams so sweet, they never want to wake up.

I have to say, I really enjoyed this movie. However, you can skip it and go straight to season 2 if you want to finish the series first. The first half of season 2 is condensed into The Movie: Mugen Train. I'll tell you right now that both are heartbreakingly lovely.

SEASON 2
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
Mugen Train Arc

Release year: 2021
Tanjiro and his Demon Slayer friends join Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku aboard the Mugen Train, where over 40 passengers disappeared without a trace.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
Entertainment District Arc

Release year: 2021
Tanjiro and his friends join Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui for a new mission in a glittering nighttime entertainment district where demons dwell.

Season two is split into two arcs, the Mugen Train Arc and the Entertainment District Arc, as previously established. The characters become even more resolute thanks to Mugen Train's intense passion and despair. While the Entertainment District Arc is less intense, you will be more aware of the risks associated with being a Demon Slayer. Although Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui is quite strong, it needs even greater strength to overcome those higher rank demons. Since there is murder and mystery, you feel like a demon slayer or detective in this arc, which is also one of my favourites.

SEASON 3
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
Swordsmith Village Arc

Release year: 2023
While in Swordsmith Village to repair his damaged blade, Tanjiro is joined by the Love and Mist Hashiras in their fight against a new demonic threat.

What I enjoy about the most recent seasons is that we also learned about Hashiras' life and the higher rank demons. The third season, known as the Swordsmith Village Arc, follows a similar pattern. As the title suggests, we eventually learn who makes the swords. They do wear hyottoko masks to conceal their identity, though. Swordsmiths are a natural target for attack whenever they are out from their village to deliver Nichirin blades because they are the only ones who are capable of creating weapons that may damage Demons.

The brief duration of each episode in this season is what I dislike. It is insufficient. The episode ends abruptly. The season finale, however, which lasted 70 minutes (1 hour 10 minutes), more than made up for it. The first half was incredibly tense and tragic. I advise using a larger screen to view the conclusion. In all honesty, the second part is rather unsettling. Although Tanjiro and Nezuko have experienced a lot, it appears that this is just the beginning. As the head of the Twelve Kizuki and the most potent Demon to have ever existed, Muzan Kibutsuji is irrational and menacing.

I eagerly await the upcoming season. I also hope you get to watch and enjoy Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba , too!

By the way, there is also a Demon Slayer - To the Swordsmith Village (2023) film. All except this one is available on Netflix. But if it drops on netflix, I suggest, watching the two movies - The Movie: Mugen Train (2021) and To the Swordsmith Village (2023) after watching seasons 1, 2 and 3.
