Anime Rant: Why I Can’t Fully Love Bleach

By Vanessa Kay @blushinggeek

Konnichiwa minna-san! So yep, I am doing a first in the blog today which is ranting (I pretty much rant everyday though, haha) about the anime Bleach. I know I’ll be receiving a lot of hate because of this, but then again, it’s my blog so I am free to do and write whatever I want here eh? It’s ok to hate or contradict me but please be respectful. You can ofcourse share your thoughts and opinions but please no bad words. Nobody wants to fight here eh.

In favor of those who don’t know or is not familiar with this anime, let me share with you this short sypnosis I’ve taken from myanimelist.

Ichigo Kurosaki is an ordinary high schooler—until his family is attacked by a Hollow, a corrupt spirit that seeks to devour human souls. It is then that he meets a Soul Reaper named Rukia Kuchiki, who gets injured while protecting Ichigo’s family from the assailant. To save his family, Ichigo accepts Rukia’s offer of taking her powers and becomes a Soul Reaper as a result.

However, as Rukia is unable to regain her powers, Ichigo is given the daunting task of hunting down the Hollows that plague their town. However, he is not alone in his fight, as he is later joined by his friends—classmates Orihime Inoue, Yasutora Sado, and Uryuu Ishida—who each have their own unique abilities. As Ichigo and his comrades get used to their new duties and support each other on and off the battlefield, the young Soul Reaper soon learns that the Hollows are not the only real threat to the human world.

I know this anime because it was aired in our local TV station when I was still in College. It was in Tagalog dub and all the kids and kid-at-heart at home watches it. I’ve watch some few episodes and the concept was kinda intriguing plus I am digging their soul reaper outfits so I added this one to my to-watch list. It wasn’t until November last year that I finally started to watch it and then eventually finished it today.

So why I can’t fully love Bleach?

I only have three reasons behind it actually. The reason why I didn’t put the word “hate” in this anime rant because I don’t really hate Bleach and I don’t think I will ever hate any particular anime at all. Ofcourse there’s some anime that I dropped but I don’t consider them as hate, they just simply failed to hold my full attention ’til the end.

BETRAYAL. Just like with books, I really hate betrayal. And yes, if you have watched this anime, you will know what I mean. I don’t mind spoilers when it comes to anime and it’s really something if I still ended up watching it eventhough I already know that something bad will happen, or if there’s some scenes that I find distasteful, etc. With Bleach, well, I was actually surprised with the betrayal, to be honest, I almost want to quit it after that. But then I got curious and decided to know the reason behind it first before I decide, and when Aizen (sorry for the spoiler) finally revealed his intention and whipped his new hairstyle, my! I changed my mind, haha. So yes, I guess you could say that I was able to cope up with that. But when I was on the Fullbring season, grrr, another betrayal again. It wasn’t really a major-major thing, but betrayal is still a betrayal!

FILLER EPISODES. I don’t really mind fillers, but Bleach has so MANY of them and what’s even more frustrating is that they are putting it on the thrilling parts. I almost lost my cool on the rescue story arc where Ichigo (together with some of his friends) went to Hueco Mundo to rescue Orihime because suddenly I was introduced into the Bount filler arc. Fillers are ok, but all should be balance. Ofcourse I still enjoyed Bleach but it’s disappointing to know that I got bored a lot of times while watching it.

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS. I understand most of the scenes actually and I don’t think I found a lot of inconsistencies in this anime, instead, I found myself asking where the other characters are. I mean, they played some big rules in each arcs but all of a sudden, they’re gone. One example would be Kon. After Ichigo lost his powers, Kon suddenly disappear. Ofcourse I understand that he needs to go but no one bothered to tell us where he went, what happened, etc. And ofcourse, how can I forget Nel!  I guess I really need to read the manga eh? But I’m afraid it won’t happen sooner.

What I like in Bleach

Before ending this rant, I guess it’s fair to share some of the things or should I say, the characters that I like in this anime, haha.

CONCEPT. As I’ve said, I do love the whole concept of this anime. Ofcourse I still need to know more about the soul society (which I’m hoping is properly explained in the manga) but overall, it was a pretty clever idea.

BYAKUYA. Dang! The first time I saw him, I just flipped. He’s so kakkoii and he reminds me of my other crush, Sesshoumaru.

LOTS OF COOL AND PRETTY CHARACTERS. Bleach has so many of them! I’m actually already thinking of getting some action figures, *wink.

GRIMMJOW. Speaking of pretty, my!!! Grimmjow is such a looker.

FUNNY. What I always like about anime is that whatever genre they are in, they can still leave you laughing your heart out. And Bleach? My! There’s so many of them.

Final thoughts.

I guess that’s all I could say about Bleach. My overall rating for this anime is 7 which is equivalent of good in myanimelist. Any negative reactions? I’ll leave my labs Byakuya to pacify you, *wink.
