Le Monsieur keeps an eye out for travel deals and sign-up bonuses for various points programs, which help us accumulate frequent flyer miles for our big trips, and occasional hotel upgrades. Earlier in the year he’d signed up for a Hyatt credit card that included two free nights at any Hyatt during the year. We’d originally planned to use those nights in Kyoto, but because our plans firmed up so close to our visit there, it didn’t work out. So we had two nights to “use or lose” by the end of the year, and decided to stay locally (about an hour away) in Newport Beach.
As the weather’s been all over the place this last week (quite hot for November) and we were mostly planning to just kick back a bit, I really didn’t do much planning, just threw a few favorites into my duffel bag. Saturday turned out to be a bit cooler than I’d expected, so I was glad I’d grabbed a lightweight jacket.

About the Hyatt Regency in Newport:
- Our building had a very mid-century feel. Above, a view of the pool area from our front door. I almost expected to see Don, Betty, Sally and Bobby down there by the pool.
- The grounds are lovely and well-maintained.
- It’s a family- and dog-friendly place.
- The staff is super friendly and helpful…two thumbs up.
- There’s a small on site golf course.
- Our room itself was a largish standard room, generic but well-maintained. The bed was comfortable, and we’d upgraded to get a bay-view balcony. Below, the view at sunset.

We also had a very nice seafood dinner at The Cannery in Newport Beach. It’s a local institution, but the menu is contemporary, and updated seasonally. I enjoyed sea bass served over butternut squash with a Thai basil and curry sauce.
