All About Microdermal Piercing

A Microdermal Piercing is a body modification (bod mod) whereby one can pierce any part of their body. This is so because the sub-dermal layer of the skin – which is on the whole body- is the one that is pierced.

Basically, any body part that has skin can spot a microdermal piercing. Meaning, the piercing bearer can have it anywhere. Just imagine, a microdermal piercing on hips!

Microdrermal implants have two parts. An anchor is implanted beneath the skin. It has holes to allow growth if body tissues around it, thus making it firm.  It has a step that protrudes from the skin surrounding it. The second part is jewellery that is screwed on to the threaded hole on the anchor.

The piercing procedure requires a lot of sterilization and precision. Both the tools used and the surface to be pierced should be free of germs. The piercing specialist holds the skin together using a clump. The piercing tool used in this operation is usually an intravenous canulae.

This is a needle that has a plastic sheath around it. The needle is then passed through the clamped skin. The plastic sheath is left underneath the skin for the jewellery to be inserted through it. Once the jewellery is in place, the tube is gently removed leaving the jewellery nicely buried under the flesh.

It is said that once the wound heals, the removal of a microdermal piercing requires a medical professional. This fact thus renders it a permanent body piercing.

However, despite its fame as a permanent method of body piercing, various external damages like pulling, tugging and others before healing may cause it to keep moving closer to the skin. Continual disturbance can lead to its falling off the skin. Quite a disaster! Ain’t it?

It is important to wash hands with antibacterial soap before cleaning the piercing during the aftercare period. This helps to keep infections at bay. The piercing should be cleaned at most twice a day and at least once a day (preferably, in the evening).

It has been noted that a solution of warm salty water is quite a safe and a cheap way of cleaning the piercing. The piercing bearer should abstain from touching and disturbing it. It is normal for the skin surrounding the piercing to be tender and slightly swollen. It can also ooze some discharge.

Eating healthy foods like fruits and vegetables plus water will speed up the healing process. A healthy helping of carbohydrates and proteins are useful as well. Indulging in habits like drinking alcohol and smoking, slows down the healing process as well as cause some discomfort. So, the bearer should keep away from those.

Generally, take good care of your health and clean your piercing well to avoid infection. Do not be impatient if it does not heal within the time frame given by the piercing specialist. Different bodies respond differently.

All in all, do enjoy flaunting your new piercing.
