Akamba Garden Centre | a Day out

By Teaantoast @teaantoastblog
The other week Tom and I went to Akamba Garden Centre in Shirley, Solihull. Neither of us had been before but I've heard some good things about the evening entertainment they do. We went thinking it would be somewhere nice to walk around on a Saturday afternoon whilst it was sunny but we didn't expect it to be so, epic.
It was about a 20 minute drive from my house and I can't believe I had never been before or heard more bout it.
It's an African/Caribbean themed garden center which stocks loads of exotic plants and garden sculptures. You'll see from the photos I took, it was walking through a little jungle.

The African Bird Walk was incredible! We spent so long in there just watching the birds, playing with the reptiles and even stroking some of the birds. There are all these exotic birds flying around and they will just come and land on you. One of them spend ages playing with the leaflet Tom was holding and I fed a tortoise. IT WAS AWESOME!!

They have plenty of places dotted around the garden center to sit and have a drink, they also have a beach area which basically a big sand playground for children to play in and for adults to sit around and chill and order a drink from the bar.
It also has a Tribe Eatery which serves African/Caribbean food (it also has an English menu and children's menu). I am not a fan of spicy food and when Tom mentioned this to one of the staff members, they recommended I have the Chicken Curry. Once our food was serves the gentlemen who recommended the chicken curry came over to check it was OK and said I could have something else if it was too spicy. I thought that was really nice of him to do this, as if we weren't already having the best time at Akamba the staff were really friendly and helpful.
They have live entertainment in the Tribe Eatery on a weekend and are open until late Thursday - Sunday evenings. I definitely want to go back and see the evening entertainment soon.
If you live in the West Midlands I strongly recommend visiting Akamba. It was a brilliant afternoon out and I can't wait to go back and amongst the 'jungle'.
