Happy hours once again, and for a change this time I am on time.This is one of my favorite wastes of time. Speaking up!Being courageous is one thing and speaking up is another. But you have to have "balls" to speak up against all that is wrong.From the time we are babies, we are taught to to mind our own business and not butt our noses into situations that don't need needling into. Who wants unnecessary trouble.But sometimes you just, must speak up.Modi ji (note the ji-I prefer to address only those who I believe in like this) initiated the Swwach Bharat campaign to create an awareness for a clean India.I believe in it too.After all I want to leave a clean India for my son and the next generation.But unfortunately I was guilty of not following up on my ideas.I am not a litter bug, I save my orange peels and peanut shells and scraps of paper that I collect during long drives and dutifully drop them in a bin. But while on a visit to the in -laws in October, I realised I am guilty of what I accuse the others of doing.Garbage in the hills needs to be disposed off in dustbins that are supposedly monkey-proof , and at appropriate distances from residential colonies. One evening I volunteered to drop a relatively small garbage bag into the bin about a kilometer away from home. However, my tired knees evilly prompted me to drop the bag near a bush at a hair pin bend. I stealthily looked around and threw the bag the needed few feet down. But ,as I am not Magic Jordan, the bag landed at a distance from the bin.Shrugging my shoulders, I walked off . A few minutes later , a middle aged lady walking with the help of an umbrella,huffed up to me and just stopped in front of me.She asked me if I was new there, or on a holiday? Before I could answer, she told me that I looked well educated. I was thrilled.
I told her that I was a teacher.
She smirked and said that she pitied my students because a teacher who was so careless towards the environment had no business minding impressionable minds.
I could say nothing.
I had never felt so small.
Then I realised how right she was to speak up.
The most courageous act is to speak out against what you believe is wrong.
Now , I am proactive. I will not shame myself anymore. I will ensure that I do the right thing -without being too righteous and a pain in the b**t and will speak up against any body who tries to pull people down or do the wrong thing or hurt anyone-even innocent puppies.
I have pulled the ears of naughty boys who tied tins to a puppy's tail once..
And I will also educate my kids to speak up whenever they see something wrong happening.
After all only when Montu speaks up against the gale ki karash and other snooty barrier-allowing strepsils to be gale ki kharash ka first aid, do things change.
