Lee and I recently took a birthday weekend foodie mini break up to Manchester. We ate a lot of really yummy food, and drank a lot of cocktails, which you can read about in several other posts, but I thought I’d also give you a quick rundown of what else we got up to.
We stayed in a hotel called The Palace, which we booked from the Secret Escapes website. It was certainly very grand from the outside, and located in a central part of Manchester. The foyer was pretty special with a huge vaulted ceiling, beautiful stonework and a gigantic Christmas Tree! The rooms themselves didn’t quite live up to the entrance however, and although they were spacious and comfortable, they were a bit rough round the edges – cracking paint and stonework, chips in the ceramics of the bath – that kind of thing. I wouldn’t book it again in a hurry unfortunately.
Speaking of impressive Christmas trees, we spotted quite a few of these on our wanderings, not least this one in the foyer of the Midland Hotel.
For breakfast one of the days we ventured up to the cool Northern Quarter, to visit the Koffee Pot. A quirky take on a traditional ‘caf’. I liked the red booths, and their food was top notch. Lee had a full english, whilst I went for sausage and poached Egg on toast. Plentiful ketchup and brown sauce, mugs of tea and sugar pourers on the table – my kind of place.
Fuelled up for the day we headed over to the National Football Museum, and happily spent a couple of hours wandering round. Lee wanted his photo taken with the Fa Cup and Premier League trophies ( you weren’t allowed to touch them unless you paid….) I said no. Bad wife.
After this was one of our much anticipated lunches at Manchester House. I really enjoyed the views from their bar and lounge, high up with views out across Manchester.
Some relaxing was done here before we trotted around the Christmas markets – very similar to the Brum ones for those wondering, and then down to the Ice Rink at Spinningifelds.
A fun packed enjoyable day in Manchester. That night we headed to Mr Coopers House & Garden – and enjoyed some food with usual and interesting ingredients – have a read here. We then fell into bed and slept like babies, until Solita called us for lunch the next day and we trekked back down the M6 home again.
