A List of Esoteric Color Names

If you ever felt like you lacked the words to describe a color, worry no more. We’ve collected a list of some obscure (yet very real) color names for use in all of your descriptive pursuits. 

  • Albicant: whitish; turning white
  • Amaranthine: immortal; undying; deep purple-red color
  • Cinnabar: red crystalline mercuric sulfide pigment; deep red or scarlet color
  • Eburnean: ivory
  • Erythraean: reddish
  • Flavescent: yellowish or turning yellow
  • Greige: grey-beige
  • Hoary: pale silver-grey
  • Isabelline: greyish yellow
  • Kermes: brilliant red; a red dye derived from insects
  • Lovat: grey-green; blue-green
  • Madder: red dye made from brazil wood; reddish or red-orange 
  • Mazarine: rich blue or reddish-blue
  • Sarcoline: flesh-colored
  • Smaragdine: emerald green
  • Tilleul: pale yellowish-green
  • Titian: red-gold, reddish brown
  • Virid: green
  • Viridian: chrome green
  • Xanthic: yellow
  • Zinnober: chrome green
