A Curious Beginning (Veronica Speedwell #1) by Deanna Raybourn

By Pamelascott

London, 1887. Veronica wields her butterfly net and a sharpened hatpin with equal aplomb. She thwarts her own abduction with the help of an enigmatic German baron with ties to her mysterious past. Promising to reveal in time what he knows of the plot against her, the baron offers her temporary sanctuary in the care of his friend Stoker-a reclusive natural historian as intriguing as he is bad-tempered. But the baron is murdered before he can reveal her secrets. Suddenly Veronica and Stoker must flee from an elusive assailant, wary partners in search of the villainous truth.

I had a great time reading A Curious Beginning.

Veronica is a brilliant character. She's fun, feisty, speaks her mind, lives on her own terms, does what she likes and cares not what anyone thinks of her. I sort of loved her. I loved the chemistry between her and Stoker even more, the way they bounce off each other, irritate one another and seem to find trouble wherever they go. Stoker is also a great character.

I'm a fan of mystery novels so loved the mystery elements of the book. The author does a brilliant job of building and keeping suspense. The author drops clues, plots twists and red herrings all over the place, nicely spread out and the revelations don't come until pretty late on. Nicely done.

I have the other two books in the series and look forward to reading them.
