2nd Public Service Scholarship Honorable Mention: Tony Chapa

2015 Goedeker’s Appliances Annual Public Service College Book Scholarship 2nd Honorable Mention

Tony is a former U.S. Marine who served in the Persian Gulf War. He then became a law enforcement officer for communities in the Chicago Area. He is currently an investigator for the U.S. Dept. of Labor. He is a co-founder of a men's rugby club, a member and board officer for the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (IN 14-2) and a facilitator of a psycho-therapeutic group for military Veterans and first responders.

Here is an excerpt from his essay:

"The course of study that I have taken thus far has allowed me to grow intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. As a graduate student at Purdue University Calumet, I have met other students who have overcome major life changing events. One element of this program is being able to disclose personal issues in order to bring self-awareness. Not only does this allow a student to succumb to personal fears but it has allowed me to understand that most of us have or will encounter suffering in our life.

As a student, I have committed to offering my knowledge and skills of psychotherapy to those who want it but were afraid of seeking counseling. I have gained a prolific amount of confidence as a result of this program. I have pushed my own limits in order to reach the goal of becoming a first rate mental health counselor. This journey has proven to me that no matter what obstacles we may face, the decision to actually make a difference does wonders to those who may not have a voice. "

Thank you for your service Tony, and good luck in your academic pursuits!
