Time flies! There were times when women had ample time to spend in kitchen preparing delicacies for their kids and family members. Nowadays, majority of the women prefer to work and thus have to balance both domestic as well as professional life wisely. With the passage of time and technological development in cities, even non-working moms are engaged in many activities.

Considering busy routine of mommies, here are very quick 15 healthy rice recipes for babies.

Rice for babies:

Rice is one of the best cereals for babies introduced as solid food by majority. It is the first preference because of its innumerable health benefits.

90% of the nutrients present in the rice grains are carbohydrates, while remaining are proteins, vitamins and minerals. Rice contains minerals like folic acid, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous and vitamin B.

Rice is also easy to digest.

White rice versus brown rice:

Even brown rice can be used for babies instead of white rice. Brown rice contains much more amount of vitamins and minerals than white rice.

Brown rice contains three times more fibers than white rice. White rice is refined form of brown rice. Thus, you can also replace white rice with brown rice for babies, as it is healthier.

All the recipes can be given to your babies (above 6 months) and kids.

Please note that salt and sugar need not be given to babies below 1 year. Also I have omitted green chillies from all the authentic rice recipes mentioned here though you can add it as per your toddler's likes.

For babies, the vegetables mentioned in these recipes can be boiled, pureed and then added.

#1. Curd rice

You can give this dish to your babies anytime as it comes with goodness of yogurt.

Ingredients Process:

Curd rice recipe can be easily prepared by mixing boiled rice and curd.

You can season it with mustard seeds, curry leaves and finely blanched green coriander leaves if you want to make it tastier and appealing for toddlers.

Benefits:

Curd contains vitamin B and many good bacteria, which boost body immunity and healthy metabolism. Curd also improves digestive health. Curd is also good alternative to milk.

#2. Ripe mango rice

This rice dish is all time favorite for mango lover kids and babies.

Do not give this dish to your babies/kids if they are suffering from diarrhea or loose motions.

Ingredients
  • Boiled rice - 1 cup
  • Chopped ripe mangoes - ½ cup
Process:

Wash mangoes thoroughly and cut the mangoes into small pieces. Mix with boiled rice. Ripe mango rice is ready.

You may also mash the mangoes or use aamras to mix with boiled rice to prepare this dish.

Benefits:

Ripe mango rice recipe has all the benefits of mangoes. Mangoes contain vitamin A, C and anti oxidants. Mangoes are also rich in dietary fibers.

#3. Rice with aaloo bhate

This is a quick rice recipe prepared in most of the Bengali houses. Usually green chillies are added in this recipe though I have preferred to omit it here.

Ingredients
  • Boiled rice - 1 cup
  • Boiled potato - 1
  • Mustard oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt as per taste
Process:

To prepare this dish, boil and mash potatoes.

Mix mashed potatoes with a teaspoon of raw mustard oil, chopped green chilies and salt. Now mix this potato mash properly with boiled rice and serve.

Benefits:

It is rich in carbohydrates. Serving this recipe to your kid may also help to reduce the effect of cold due to presence of mustard oil.

#4. Lemon rice

Lemon rice is a famous South Indian dish.

Ingredients Process:

Heat oil and add mustard seeds, black gram, cumin seeds, turmeric powder and curry leaves.

Mix boiled rice and salt with this seasoning. Add lemon juice to it according to the taste and mix again and serve.

Benefits:

It is very healthy rice recipe rich in vitamin c and carbohydrate. Lemon juice is anti oxidant and vitamin C helps in easy absorption of iron in your baby's body.

#5. Tamarind rice

This is another famous rice recipe close to every South Indian's heart.

Ingredients Process:

Soak tamarind in a little water and keep it aside for sometime. After sometime, squeeze tamarind and collect the tamarind juice in a separate bowl to use later in the recipe.

Heat oil and add mustard seeds, black gram, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, curry leaves. Mix boiled rice and salt.

Add tamarind juice to it according to the taste and serve.

Benefits:

Tamarind is rich in vitamin C and it also has great influence in reducing skin inflammation. Tamarind juice is also a good blood purifier.

#6. Onion fried rice Ingredients
  • Boiled rice - 1 cup
  • Salt as per taste
  • Turmeric powder - a pinch
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Sliced onions - ½ cup
Process:

Heat oil and add mustard seeds. Let them sputter. Then add sliced onions.

After onions turn semi transparent, add boiled rice, salt, turmeric powder, and coriander powder to it. Mix it. Onion fried rice is ready to serve.

Benefits:

Onions are good source of carbohydrates, vitamin B6, manganese and other minerals like phosphorous, calcium, iron etc. It also contains good anti oxidants. Onions are also said to be effective in cold and cough.

#7. Matar pulao or Green peas pulav

Matar or green peas pulao is another quick rice recipe, which you should not miss giving to your babies and kids.

Ingredients
  • Boiled rice - 1 cup
  • Salt as per taste
  • Turmeric powder - a pinch
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Green peas - 1/2 cup
  • Fresh coriander leaves to garnish.
Process:

Heat oil and add mustard seeds. Let them sputter. Then add peas.

After peas are cooked, add boiled rice, salt, turmeric powder, cumin powder, and coriander powder to it. Mix it. Peas pulao is ready.

You may also add ginger and garlic paste to it while frying if you like. It can be served with curd or raita for toddlers.

Benefits:

Green peas are rich in proteins and rice in carbohydrates. Thus this recipe is healthy for your babies fulfilling the carbohydrates and proteins need for their fast growth.

#8. Sweet sugary rice

This is the quickest rice recipe you can give to your baby with sweet tooth. Make sure that this recipe is given only on a treat basis as sugar ideally is not advisable for babies below 1.

Ingredients
  • Boiled rice - 1 cup
  • Ghee - 1 teaspoon
  • Sugar - 1 teaspoon
Process:

To prepare this, you simply have to mix sugar, ghee and boiled rice together. Sweet rice is ready.

Benefits:

This dish provides calories from carbohydrates and yes, a sweet smile on your kid's face.

Note:

Eating excess amount of sugar may cause tooth decay, be careful not to give this sweet sugary rice to your babies and kids more often.

#9. Rice with mashed sweet potato Ingredients
  • Boiled rice - 1 cup
  • Sweet potatoes - 2 small boiled and mashed
Process:

Add mashed boiled sweet potatoes to boiled rice and mix. As sweet potatoes contain natural sugar, nothing more is to be added to this dish.

Benefits:

Sweet potatoes are also rich in fibers thus help in smooth digestion. Sweet potatoes are high in vitamin B6, C, D and carotenoids. They are also good source of magnesium, potassium, iron. So there are good reasons why you should try this mash recipe for your babies.

#10. Raw mango rice Ingredients Process:

Heat oil and add mustard seeds, black gram, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, curry leaves and green chilies.

Add grated mango pieces too with these spices and mix well. Then, mix boiled rice and salt to it according to the taste.

Serve raw mango rice.

Benefits:

Raw mangoes are rich in vitamin A and C. It also prevents iron deficiency and bleeding gums. It also boosts immunity and improves digestion process.

#11. Vegetable khichdi

Khichdi is the most preferred one pot meal for babies due to its nutritional value. It can be prepared within minutes if a few pre-preparations like chopping of vegetables and soaking rice-lentil mix is done.

Ingredients Process:

Heat oil and add cumin seeds and ginger-garlic paste. Sauté the ingredients.

Add chopped vegetables and let them cook for some time. Add salt, turmeric powder, ginger-garlic paste, cumin powder and soaked rice-yellow gram mix to it.

Pressure cook for two whistles and the quick vegetable khichdi is ready to serve.

This is very healthy food to give your babies and kids as it fulfills all the nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, vitamins, fibers) requirement of your babies.

#12. Plain khichdi

This is the easiest and quickest khichdi recipe that does not require any lengthy procedures.

Ingredients:
  • Washed and soaked rice - 1 cup
  • Split green gram - 1/2 cup
  • Salt as per taste
  • Turmeric powder - a pinch
Process:

Add pinch of turmeric powder and salt to soaked rice-green gram mix. Cook for two whistles. Khichdi is ready.

This can be served with curd/milk/butter milk/ kadhi.

Benefits:

This is also the nutritious dish for your kids and babies. Khichdi contains high amount of carbohydrates and proteins that are essential for your baby's growth.

Green gram is also rich in fibers and help improving your baby's digestion process.

#13. Rice parathas Ingredients:
  • Wheat flour - 1 cup
  • Boiled rice - 1/2 cup
  • Turmeric powder - a pinch
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Red chili powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Oil (to add in wheat flour) - 1 spoon
  • Oil - to cook parathas
Process:

Add boiled rice to wheat flour. Add salt, turmeric powder, oil, coriander powder, cumin powder, red chili powder to it.

Knead the flour and roll parathas and cook them in a tawa. For toddlers, serve parathas with curd/pickle.

Benefits:

This recipe contains carbohydrates and wheat protein.

These yummy parathas can also be made from left over rice but I would suggest you to use fresh rice if you are making them for your babies and kids.

#14. Tomato fried rice Ingredients:
  • Boiled rice - 1 cup
  • Chopped tomatoes - 1 cup
  • Chili powder - 1 teaspoon (optional)
  • Cumin powder - 1 tea spoon
  • Salt as per taste
  • Turmeric powder a pinch
  • Oil - 1 teaspoon
Process:

Shallow fry cut tomatoes in a pan. Add red chili powder/ chopped green chilies, cumin powder, salt and turmeric powder to it. Then add boiled rice to it and mix it. Tangy tomato fried rice is ready.

Benefits:

Tomatoes are rich in vitamin A, C, folic acid and anti oxidants. It also speeds up healing of wounds. Thus this is another healthy quick rice dish you can give to your babies and kids.

#15. Vegetable rice salad Ingredients:
  • Boiled rice - 1 cup
  • Grated raw vegetables (tomatoes, cabbage, beet root, onions) - 1 cup
  • Salt as per taste
Process:

Add chopped vegetables, salt to boiled rice. This recipe can be given to your toddlers and kids.

It can also be given to babies (use grated vegetables) above one year if they have teeth, are able to chew and also have no issues with digestion of raw vegetables and fruits.
