140: How to Talk About the Lives of Other People in Mandarin Chinese

By Learnmandarinnow

Many people have idols or people they look up to. They may be actors or singers or someone from everyday life. If you have a favourite, be sure to know how to talk about this subject with your friend and colleagues; plus, be able to respond if someone tells you about theirs.

In this Podcast, you will learn:

(i) To take about someone you admire or has inspired you

(ii) How to describe why you like a particular person or entity

Dialogue: (在咖啡厅) (zài kā fēi tīng) (at the café )

A: 我特别喜欢听麦克尔杰克逊的歌。他的舞台表演和歌曲都是全世界独一无二的。我觉得他真不愧是流行之王,他去世的时候我很伤心。

Wǒ tè bié xǐ huān tīng Mài Kè Ěr Jié Kè Xùn de gē. Tā de wǔ tái biǎo yǎn hé gē qǔ dōu shì quán shì jiè dú yī wú èr de. Wǒ jué de tā zhēn bù kuì shì líu xíng zhī wáng, tā qù shì de shí hou wǒ hěn shāng xīn. I really like Michael Jackson’s songs.

His stage performance and songs were one of the kind in the world. I think he really deserved to be the ‘King of Pop’ and I was really sad when he passed away.

B: 我的偶像是李小龙,是他让外国人认识了中国功夫。他是我们华人的骄傲!但他32岁就过世了,实在是很可惜。 Wǒ de ǒu xiàng shì Lǐ Xiǎo lóng, shì tā ràng wài guó rén rèn shi le Zhōng Guó gōng fū. Tā shì wǒ mén huá rén de jiāo ào! Dàn tā sān shí èr suì jiù guò shì le, shí zài shì hěn kě xī. My idol is Bruce Lee. It was he who let foreigners know about Chinese Kung Fu. He was the pride of Chinese people, but he passed away at the age of 32. It was very unfortunate indeed.
