12 Ways to Organize Your Dorm Room on a Budget

By Savvybrown @savvybrownblog

Just because you’re living in a 10×10 room doesn’t mean that you can’t stay organized. In fact, it’s kind of essential that you do, otherwise you won’t be able to open your door by the end of midterms. (Seriously). So here’s 12 ways to DIY and organize your dorm room on a budget.

1. Make curtains out of sheets - Instead of buying expensive curtains, just grab a pair of flat twin sheets from home, or buy a cheap pair from the dollar store. Then use curtain rings with clipslike these

2. Hang your Jewelry on the wall - Floor and desk space are impossible to find in dorm rooms, so this hanging jewelry organizer is perfect! It’s made from a fabric remnant that was stretched over a framed bulletein board. To see how I made one click here to hang them up!

3. Use suitcases as storage – Store your out-of-season clothing inside of a suitcase or a trunk that you bring with you. Then cover with a tablecloth and you have a coffee table or a side table.

4. Raise Your Bed for Storage - First, get your hands on a set of these. Then grab a few file boxes and fill with whatever you don’t need to use everyday. You can push the boxes right under the bed, or to make it easier to clean, place them on rolling carts like these

5. Upend a Bookcase – A sturdy narrow bookcase like the IKEA Expedit and lay it on it’s side to use it as an entertainment center, shoe storage or even extra seating!

6. DIY Dry Erase Board – Need to know whose turn it is to empty the garbage? Want to know what time to meet in the commons? Make you and your new roomie a dry erase board, using a picture frame, and fun fabric that you choose and dry erase markers in fun colors! Learn how to make one yourself here.

7. Use Tension Rods for Shoe Organizing - Use 3 (or 6) tension rods the same width as your closet to organize your shoes! I found this great idea on Pinterest!

8.. Hang Your Laundry On the Wall - Getting things up off of the floor is a must in a tiny room. Check out my version of this nifty idea here.

11. Hang Your Scarves and Belts In 2 Inches of Space - Use a hanger and shower curtain rings to neatly hang your accessories in your closet. Just like this!

12. Upcycled Vintage Storage - Use things like this upcycled vintage straw holder to hold your pens, even makeup brushes!
