Top Ayurvedic Skin Care Strategies for Healthy and Glowing Skin

Glowing and healthy skin is a sign of good health and vitality of the body. But due to accumulation of the toxic elements in the body the skin tends to get rough and dry with wrinkles. According to Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of healing practices, following three types of discrepancies or dosh set in the skin namely:

Vatta skin type

If vata is predominant the skin of a person is dry, rough, cold, wrinkled and thin with fine pores.

For treating this type of skin problems the person should use only herbal skin care products and sleep and eat in time and properly.

Pitta skin type

If pitta is predominant, the skin is fair, sensitive, soft, warm, and of medium thickness, less tolerant to hot food and burns easily. When out of balance, Pitta skin can flare up in rashes, rosacea, acne, or sunspots.

For treating this skin type cooling therapies should be given and exposure to the sun is avoided while also the steam therapy should not be given during the beauty treatments.

Kaph skin type

If the constitution is of kapha dosha the skin of a person is oily, cold, heavy, soft, slow, dense, dull, lubricating and thick with a tendency towards large pores and proneness to cystic acne.

For treating this skin type both internal and external detoxification is needed on regular basis to keep the toxins out of the body otherwise the acne on the skin build up easily.

What type of skin care is suggested by the Ayurvedic science for treating the skin problems in the human body?

  • Eat vegetables like  lettuce, carrot, cucumber, daikon radish (which is revered by Ayurvedic healers for its purifying properties), fennel, and tender asparagus tips Legumes, walnut, avocado, salmon, tomato, and pomegranate to nourish your skin. Retain your skin’s glow by indulging in excessive water intake, fiber food and good fats.
  • Eat like a bird with lots of quantities of nuts and seeds as they contain omega 3 fatty acids, fiber and essential fats. Add almonds, sunflower seeds, flax seeds, and other nuts to your oatmeal.
  • Drink plenty of water on regular basis.

    Avoid spicy foods and drink basil leaves juice to help keep white patches and acne at bay.

  • Avoid chemical based cleanser and use only home made herbal cleanser to exfoliate the skin.
  • Clean your skin and pores with unpasteurized milk. Make a face mask by mixing turmeric powder, milk, and sandalwood paste. Apply it on the face for 10-15 minutes and wash it with water.
  • Make your own herbal moisturizer. Mix yogurt with a tablespoon of both lemon and orange juice and use as a face mask. Leave it on your face for a while and wash it off with lukewarm water.
  • Condition your skin with a mixture of two tablespoon of cream with honey, leave it on for 5 minutes and remove with a wet cotton ball.
  • Rub a raw potato or use orange juice to get smooth complexion, even skin tone and get rid of pigmentation.
  • Stay hydrated throughout the day and give preference to warm liquids, such as herbal tea. Making some spicy tea with fresh ginger and lemon will wake you up in the afternoon and keep your digestion healthy, which is important for glowing skin.
  • Exercise will also improve blood circulation, digestion, and give you a healthy blush
  • Doze off at the sunset and rise early with the sunrise in the morning.
  • Apricot oil applied 2-3 times a week at night makes my skin feel very smooth and healthy. Once a week give yourself (or ask your partner to give you) a full body massage with oil. It stimulates healthy blood circulation, lymph drainage, reduces water retention, and keeps your romantic relationship exciting.
  • Practice deep breathing and pranayam exercises suggested in yoga asnas. These exercises will help you flush out the toxins from your system by breathing properly.
