Throwing with Signals

By Meachrm @BaseballBTYard

Here’s a quick suggestion for pitchers and catchers now that the throwing season is starting up:

When pitchers start throwing from a mound, have them get a sign from the catcher first.  Even if all they are throwing is fastballs.  Here are three reasons:

  1. This is what they are going to have to do during a game so it’s never too early to start doing it in practice.
  2. It forces them to take their time between pitches.  Many young pitchers just get the ball and throw again without much thought.  Signals for pitches and location make the pitcher think and focus more.
  3. It gives the catchers some work too instead of just making them be a backstop.
