How to Get Rid of An Overeating Problem

By Pamela Brown

Have you ever eaten a good size meal that leaves your belly feeling full, but your brain seems to think you’re still hungry?  Why the mixed messages?

Stop the Confusion Please!

Even though you had a big meal, and your stomach is feeling the after effects, your brain may not have sensed anything, at all.

The brain must experience pleasure, aroma, taste, and satisfaction to understand that you have indeed eaten.

If you are not aware of what you eat while you eat, then you’re brain doesn’t know you have eaten.  Awareness of the food you eat allows the brain to pick up the message that you are eating, and have eaten.  Awareness is a requirement for your brain to realize you don’t need anymore food.

Otherwise, your brain will still think you’re hungry, and will send your stomach hunger signals, which leads to more eating.

This is why most people who think they have an overeating problem DON’T have one.

What Causes the Brain to Miss Out on Good Eating

Consider the following:

  • Do you basically inhale your food?
  • Do you eat on the run?
  • Are you stressed when you eat?
  • Are you talking while you eat, or even watching television?
  • Even if you ate slowly, were you talking to others, watching television, or wandering into space?

Anyone of these can leave your brain out of your eating experience.  So what can you do to keep from overeating?

  • Turn off television
  • Only engage in relaxing conversation while eating
  • Allow yourself enough time to eat (i.e., don’t eat on the run)
  • Turn on relaxing music, even dim lights and light candles if possible
  • Literally suck the tastes and pleasures out of your food
  • Enjoy your food; take pleasure in eating instead of picturing what part of your body it will settle
  • Smell your food, enjoy the aromas

Eating on the go and eating while stressed are why most people who think they have an overeating problem really don’t.  When you take time to enjoy your food, taste it, notice it, and be there with it, your brain notices and signals that you are full.  This is very important if you want to stop overeating.
