Summary:
If you need a makeup tool which acts a concealer, a highlighter and a primer, then I think the Yves Saint Laurent Touché Eclat might be right up your street.
Primarily known for its sleek gold design, Touché Eclat is instantly recognisable as an elegant piece of makeup history, supposedly able to hide a magnitude of sins. Particularly notorious with being able to hide dark circles beneath eyes, it has become a staple in many make up bags around the world. Coming in at £25 naturally means there are cheaper high street alternatives, but so far I’ve found none have worked well, or only specialise in either concealing or highlighting, so I took the plunge and bought Touché Eclat hoping the extravagant claims could provide some truth.
There are 8 shades available, and shade 1 is best for me. It’s quite pink so it blended well with my skin tone, although I have to say I’m not overwhelmed with the results so far. I do have dark circles beneath my eyes which do need a highly pigmented and long lasting concealer to cover them, without making me look like a reverse panda. I have found that it does conceal them to a certain degree, but only by using a couple of layers. Even then they aren’t that concealed which is disappointing.
I have read tips which have suggested applying the Touché Eclat in dots under the eyes, waiting for about 20-30 seconds and then gently tapping it into skin and reapplying if necessary. This has given better results for me, although if you wait too long then it’s hard to smudge the concealer.
Although this conceals the color it obviously doesn’t affect the texture of your skin. Underneath my eyes shows obvious signs of fatigue which, in certain lights, is actually highlighted by Touché Eclat – not ideal! I suspect that a slightly more yellow shade would cover gray circles better, but I can only speculate.
As a highlighter it does fare slightly better. I think because I have such pale skin it works better as a concealer than a highlighter because it’s quite close to my natural color. It isn’t very obvious when I apply it beneath my eyebrows or on my cheekbones because the color is quite similar to my natural skin tone. I do think the texture of the Touché Eclat is good though; it’s not too runny and it’s easy to blend. You only need a little bit too by brushing the excess onto the back of your hand and using it as a paint pot. You will use quite a bit less every time and hopefully it will last longer.
However I’m unsure I can justify the £25 price tag. I’m yet to find another brand which works well, but from my experience this one doesn’t either. It’s not awful, I just haven’t found that it’s lived up to the hype. I was also slightly put off as the first pen I had had a small hole near the tip which the liquid was pouring out from. I exchanged it, and the replacement had the same issue. Luckily I checked this before leaving the store so they could replace it again. I believe this was a batch issue, but still disappointing from a product which costs so much.
