World Meat Free Day!

By Fitnessontoast @fitnessontoast

Monday the 15th June marks World Meat Free Day which encourages people around the world to go meat-free for just one day. To my mind, it’s about recognising the importance of protein in our diets, and perhaps seeking out other ways in which to source your protein. As part of my Ambassadorship for Quorn, I created this cute little ‘Quorn Boats’ dish, which seemed totally appropriate for the occasion. As always with my recipes, it’s supposed to be quick, easy and healthy. Quorn is an excellent source of protein and this is a great little meal to consume post-workout to help repair muscles, or indeed to entertain friends with on the canapé platter! It’ll keep you fuller for longer and hopefully keep you from snacking too often. WHY GO MEAT FREE FOR THE DAY?

Meat production has a huge impact on the environment, the land on which it’s farmed, on ones health and indeed animal treatment. Very often the meat travels far, which can pollute the environment. I always encourage friends and clients to do their research about whatever eat, be it vegetables, fruit or indeed protein sources. There are several benefits to reducing meat from your diet. Red meats especially contain high levels of saturated fats which are linked to increased risk of coronary heart artery disease, obesity and hypertension. If ten million people we’re to go meat free for just one day they’d make an efficiency of 885m calories, 48 tonnes of saturated fat, or the equivalent of the weight of 3.5 Big Bens! Alernatively you could use the CO2 savings to drive around the world 2,438 times!

THE ETHOS:

As mentioned ‘World Meat Free Day’ could have a big impact on the planet when considering matters of sustainability and the future of our sphere, of land usage and carbon emissions. Whilst it’s only for one day it’ll help encourage behavior change and the more people who are prepared to stand behind it, the greater the change could be!

THE RECIPE:

I love cooking for friends and family. From personal experience when visiting someone else’s dinner party I much prefer it when I’m presented with the option to pick-and-choose what I wish to eat, and how much. These little Quorn boats offer just such a choice, as they are bite-sized, allow for different garnishes (to taste), are quick and easy to whip up, whilst acting as a canapé, starter or main depending on how many you wish to eat! They are super easy to make yet with a little imaginative decoration, can come out looking cute and professional! It’s also a super healthy, low carb, high protein option*. The base is made up of protein-rich quorn and instead of adding it to traditional pasta or spaghetti these salad leaves are the prefect spoon size high nutritional container.

Ingredients (Serves 4):
1. Quorn
2. 1/2 Onion
3. One garlic clove
4. Two small chilis
5. Baby mushrooms (save 1/3 for garnish)

8. Spices – mixed herbs, oregano etc (your choice)
9. Salad heads, little gem hearts

Garnish:
1. Avocado
2. Spring onion

7. Serve!
