Wine Wednesday Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre (GSM)

Instead of a specific bottle of wine this week I am focusing on Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre blend (also known as GSM). This is one of my favorite reds, a great blend that has its origins in the Côtes du Rhône region. Before you tune out because I am going all wine geek on you, just know that this blend is popular in France, Spain, Australia, California and Washington. It’s up to the winemaker to decide what the percentages are but the majority of the blend is Grenache and Syrah with a small amount of mourvedre.

The Grenache and Syrah are what give you that beautiful ruby color with strong notes of berries and spice and the mourvedre gives you that bite (tannins) and finish. I can imagine my Mom, or someone who doesn’t know a ton about wine saying, what the heck does that all mean. GSM gets its color and lighter fruit flavor from the Grenache, the Syrah gives it a stronger fruit flavor and the Mourvedre gives you that “sweater” feeling on your tongue.

The great thing about this blend is that you find really great bottles under $20 and even a few under $10.

Hahn Central Coast GSM $14

Pontificis is from Trader Joe’s and under $10. One of my favorite wines!
