Who Should Brunt Most of the Blame for the Lack of Success This Season

By Kipper @pghsportsforum
Should it be Colbert, Tomlin, Haley, LeBeau, or the players.

You forgot to add the Rooneys. They have my vote as I believe they are the ones who make the final decision on all the coaches. Well, at least the ones listed here.
Lack of success or lack of post season. There is commonality between them but it is not exclusive. If the Steelers had made the post season, I think they would have made it into the AFC title game. The team was playing good ball at the end. Hell, even Guy(the turnstile) Wimper was playing decent!!!! ESPN is starting a 10 part series with the 10 plays that shaped the Steelers season. There should be a few examples of why there was no post season. It seemed like a team effort in the losses as well as the wins. The praise and negatives should be shared equally from the owners down to the ball boys.
I have to say Tomlin is at fault. Another season not having his team ready for the opener. Sleep walking through other games and just no identity. The defense is an aging bunch, the offense is new with young guys but it still goes on Tomlin. Other teams have their problems and they manage to win. If Tomlin losses number four opener in a row next season, I'll probably start a fire Tomlin now club.

LOL ! as soon as I read your name/handle I started laughing and even more once I've read your post here. I'll probably get a heck of a laugh once I click on the site. Thanks
Wow ! I can't believe they have that on facebook. Too funny but I haven't joined just yet.
Well the first to bite the bullet was the offensive line coach, not that is wasn't deserving for the lack of teaching the new or young players recently drafted, but the injuries and piece work wasn't his fault and actually he got the fill in players, especially at center, up to speed pretty well.
Colbert and here's why...
First off, Haley's Offense wasnt all that bad, especially vconsidering the ridiculous amount of injuries on an Ofensive Line learning a new blocking scheme from a coach that wasnt very good at coaching. Rookie RB and losing your deep threat WR and not replacing him and then not having your Goto reciever in TE - Heath Miller to sytart the season.. The Offense held its own through difficult times
Defensively they were a mess. It was a mistake to keep Ike Taylor, the Defensive Line was and still is a joke. The linebackers were inadequate. Basically the construction of the Defense this season was poor and the results showed it. Dick LeBeau has shown plenty capable of being able to shut down any offense with the right personnel. However when you have mediocre personnel, you can t polish a turd. The construction of this defense was poor. Not replacing Mike Wallace with an option better than Manny Sanders didn't help either.
Defense was ranked 20th in yardage
Ranked 14th allowing an astonishing 23.1 points per game
Respectable 9th against the Pass
An UGLY 21st against the Run, which I cant remember the last time a Steelers run defense was that bad.
The run defense sucked because the Defensive Line is sonctruction with **** poor 1srt Round draft picks, an inadequate NT that got pushed around and an aged son to retire Brett Kiesel.
Different coaches wont make crappy talent better, Colbert needs to start drafting better and bring in better free agents or he needs fired
I like kippers opinion here. Colbert did a poor job of planning in his attempt to deal with a combined triple threat of salary cap issues, free agency and age, which all came to a head in the past 2 years.
Kipp does make good points. Was it Cowher all this time placing Colbert in the right direction ? I know Bill had his share or few flops at draft picks but of late, almost all these guys are tanking. I also think Colbert tried to play both ends from the middle with keeping aging players and now we have an old team. It will be interesting to see what they do this off season.
Look at the drafts since Cowher has left.
Cowher ran Tom Donahoe out of town. They clashed on who to draft and sign. Cowher was a very instrumental voice in that. We know that for certain. Colbert was largely brought in to be Cowher's right hand man, cause Cowher couldn't work with someone calling the shots in this department.
Tomlin isn't Cowher in this regard. Sure he has his inputs and preferences, but he's like most other coaches, he lets the GM do his job.. We have never heard anything else to suggest otherwise which leaves Kevin Colbert. This is the guy who IMO relied on Cowher to make the calls in the draft and team building and since then it's largely been all Colbert.
Just look at how this teams has been constructed. Under Cowher, he didnt keep aging vets. He was always a step ahead in replacing them with younger players and when they hit the end of their contracts, in their early 30's, we weren't resigning these guys. They walked and we replaced them with younger, cheaper options who fill the blanks very well.
Now... we've had very old teams, cause we've continued to give guys into their 30's contracts when they are past their primes and we are giving up on young talent to keep washed up old guys (Keenan Lewis vs. Ike Taylor anyone?) The drafting has produced a wide array of busts without Cowherand about the only thing holding this team together right now from being the Cleveland Browns is Ben Roethlisberger

Guess the answer to the thread is Colbert, but geez, who hired him? That's why I say the answer should be the Rooney's.
My vote goes to Colbert as who is to blame for the last TWO years. As Kip said, Colbert hung on to Cowher's players for far too long, signing them to big dollar deals in their declining years, leaving the Steelers square in the depths of salary cap hell. I understand the whole "let's make another run" thing, but if that's the deal, sign those guys to big one year deals. However, when your unable to replenish your roster in the Draft and can't afford to keep your rare successes...that is a real problem if you are a franchise that has Lombardi expectations year in and year out. Colbert has been exposed for what he is, with most of Cowher's players gone, a guy with no idea how to build a roster..he's a roster killer.
