What to Read This Week

By Crossstitchyourheart @TMNienaber

I recently discovered this book store out of CA called “Book Passages” which does something really fantastic.  For about $30 a month they’ll send you a first edition, signed copy of a book hand picked by their fabulous bookish staff.  You can visit their website to sign up (it’s called the first editions club) or see what signed books they have left and buy individually.  I jumped on the chance  to join this club after seeing what books they’d had for previous months.  So, because of how excited I am, this what to read this week post is all books recommended by BP. Here are the books I’m adding to my to-read list this week.  And you should too!

Burial Rites by Hannah Kent.  This was October’s pick and the month I started my membership.  (From the jacket) Charged with the brutal murder of two men, Anges Magnusdottir has been removed to her homeland’s farthest reaches, to an isolated farm in northing Iceland t await execution.  Horrified at the prospect of housing a convicted murderer, the family on the farm avoids Agnes.  Her arrival threatens the peaceful rhythm of their way of life…I’m about 50 pages in and so far it’s lived up to the hype.  Set in an environment that reminds me of The Hangman’s Daughter but with a changing narrator through each chapter it’s a take on perspectives.

The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion: This is November’s pick which I haven’t started yet, but I’m looking forward to it.  (From the jacket) Meet Don Tillman, a brilliant yet socially challenged professor of genetics who’s decided it’s time he found a wife.  And so, in the orderly, evidence based manner with which Don approaches all things, he designs the Wife Project to find the perfect partner…  This sounds like a lighter read than Burial Rites but perfect for my holiday light reads list.  I’m looking forward to curling up with this pick over Thanksgiving break and a pot of tea.
