What to Read This Week

By Crossstitchyourheart @TMNienaber

It’s your favorite day of the new week today!  The what to read this week post.  So, here are the books I’ve added to my to-read list this week and I think you should too.

Canada by Richard Park: Dell Parson’s parents have just robbed a bank.  This, as you might expect, leads to them being arrest.  Dell’s sister abandons him and the 15 year old main character is forced to set off on his own and figure out what’s going on with his life.  Then he finds himself in Canada with a family friend who (as you can also expect) as more going on than just what you see on the surface.  I first heard about this book when a fellow blogger reviewed it for their book review day.  I’m a little upset with myself for not saving the link, so if you reviewed this book put up a link in the comments so people can go read about it.  It just sounds like a good book, plain an simple.  Not only do we have beautifully written coming of age, but some mystery to pick up the pace.  Fantastic?  I think it will be.

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell: Goodreads has been advertising this book pretty hardcore which makes me a little nervous to pick it up.  I don’t know, I guess I don’t like it when a book is shoved in my face as “the best new somethingoranother”.  But it did get a glowing review from John Green who is a pretty good judge of what’s good and what’s terrible so maybe it’ll be worth it.  I’m also not sure of what I think about the author’s name…I can’t tell if it’s gimmicky or there for a purpose (anyone know?).  But I guess I should just read the book and find out for myself.  It’s 1986 and Eleanor and Park know their first love is destined to go down in flames but they want to try and keep it alive anyway.  Sounds like a simple enough plot, but I like a good young adult novel and I’ve read a few good ones over the last few months so maybe this will continue the streak.

Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void by Mary Roach: Well, if you’ve followed the blog for a while you know that Mary Roach also wrote that cadeavor book I reviewed and talked about earlier.  Well, this is the second book of hers my students are getting to read (they had an option between the two) and I thought I should finally read it (I actually started it over break so technically it’s already made it from the to-read to the reading list).  Basically it’s all about human life in space, what it would take for humans to live in space/have space like environment on earth.  All in Mary Roach’s trademark black human/sarcastic style.  I’ll keep you updated on how it’s going, but I’m proud of myself for reading more than 1 non-fiction book this year.

Hope you all have a good final day of the weekend/start to your new week.  As usual you can keep in touch on the twitter @xstitchurheart or friend me on Goodreads.
