The globally renowned port of Kochi is situated close to two islands, namely Willingson and Vallarpadam Islands, in the section of this lake that is known as Kochi Lake. Another chief highlight about this lake is that the internationally renowned Nehru Trophy Boat Race is organized in a portion of this lake, which is known as Punnamada Lake in the Kuttanad region. The first prime minister of India after independence, Jawaharlal Nehru, visited Kerala in the year 1952. He was given a warm and hearty welcome by the people of the state. On his visit to this southern state of India, he was escorted in a snake boat. After experiencing the thrill of traveling on a snake boat, the prime minister dedicated a rolling trophy to the winner of the snake boat race. The trophy presented to the winner of this race is a replica of the snake boat in sliver, which is placed on a wooden stand. People from all over India and even foreign tourists come to witness this exciting boat race, which is organized in the month of August, every year. Participants from different villages come to participate in this race and they take it as honor if they win the race.
