Tiny Steps in Right Direction

By Survivingana @survivingana

Sophie has made a few very small steps in turning around her food restriction. She is not as strict or as strong as last week. There is a little more food intake but still really only two small meals a day. Her mood has improved though. Makes for a happier household.

Soph did take steps to sort out a couple of friend problems and she is very proud of herself for working through that all by herself (me too!).  However for the other things she is still hiding behind the eating disorder behavior.

Her counselor today was also relatively happy with the small steps Sophie has taken and the increased food. Bottom line though is to keep increasing food. That’s the only solution. To fight back. To be mindful when she eats. To remind herself there are no bad foods. That food is not the solution to life problems.

Her psychiatrist on the other hand txted and said to up the medication immediately. Really?! There is not enough evidence to say the minute decrease has brought on the restriction. And upping medication is such a bandaid approach. When does my daughter get to work through solutions, apply and practice what she has learnt for every day problems. Why increase the dose of medication to cope with that?? If we don’t try to get her to make decisions without medicating her, Sophie will never be able to function on her own. She will reach for medication to pull her out of situations.

So am ignoring psychiatrist and will fight that one through on Tuesday when we see her. If my daughter is still struggling in a few more weeks (unless she is really endangering her health) then we can up the dose. It may be that Sophie may end up always needing a psychotic medication for anxiety, but if we don’t give weaning her off a proper trial then we or she will never know.
