The Sports Jobs We All Want

By Rosstalkssports @rosstalkssports

Today we rank the top 5 on the field jobs in sports.  Obviously everyone wants to be Lebron James or Peyton Manning 1 These are the best jobs that average fellas can aspire to. Who’s got it better than these guys? I’ll give you a hint (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDgTrQjELC4).

5. Rotation Pitcher – MLB

This is one of the greatest jobs in sports. You only have to work once every five days 2. The rest of the days you get one of the best seats in the house to watch a baseball game.

Biggest Pro: You are still a professional athlete, which means you get professional athlete pay and professional athlete action3.

Biggest Con: If you are like me 4 most of your time at baseball games is spent on your smart phone, reading a book, or grabbing more food to pass the time until something interesting happens. Yet even harboring a healthy disdain for attending baseball games this is still a top 5 on the field job in sports.

4.  Last Rotation Guy – NBA

The same theory as the rotation pitcher holds here. So instead of just copying and pasting what I wrote in the for the last job, I’ll do what they pay me for and explain. Let us count the ways.

  1.    Indoors vs. Outdoors:
    1.  If you’ve got to sit and watch a game it’s always better to have separation between you and the elements
  2.    Increased Fitness
    1. If you want to stay in solid shape NBA workouts will help you farm more than those done in MLB.
  3.   Season Timing
    1. You work for part of the year and you have the choice to either work through the winter 5 or through the summer. Everyone chooses winter without a doubt.

Biggest Cons (In no particular order): David Stern, The Bobcats, David Stern, The Raptors, David Stern, Detroit Pistons, and last but most certainly not least David Stern.

3. Backup Quarterback

This is the best player position in professional sports. You are a backup at the most important position in the most important sport in the US. As long as you never have to go into the game you are one of the most loved players on the team. When I was a kid my friends had posters of Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, or Michael Vick on their walls. I had Jim Sorgi and Todd Collins. 6

Biggest Pro: You get paid to watch 16 NFL games from the sideline each year. That’s enough games to be excited about, but not so much that you hate your life. 7

Biggest Con: The defining moment of your career could look like this.

2. Referee – NBA

Why an NBA referee over a referee in one of the other leagues? You have the biggest impact on the game where the name on the back of the jersey matter way more than the name on the front. Which means you can command bigger bonuses than referees in other leagues when you help guide “the right teams” to The Finals. 8

1. Head Coach – NCAAF

The number one on the field job. You are the guy making the most money on your team in the second most popular league in the country*10

Biggest Pro: If you win in the south you are Jesus reincarnated. If that’s not your style you can win out west and date co-eds forever.

Biggest Con: That one day of everyone in the media hating you when you leave for a better school until players start hitting each other again and they all conveniently forget.
