People’s increased awareness about the world’s green cause is changing the way people live their lives. Ecological disasters and climate changes have increased the importance that we concentrate on adopting eco-friendly practices that will minimize our environmental impact.

Studies and surveys reflect this trend that a greater number of people are now purchasing eco-conscious items in an attempt to lower the environmental hazards risk and salvage the earth. And manufacturers, greatly encouraged by the increasing number of people looking for eco-friendly products, are designing and selling new products that are geared toward the betterment of our environment.

Some green products for the home have gained popularity by leaps and bounds, and here are just a few:

  • Home Décor Products: The choices for green home décor items are never ending. From mattresses and pillows to curtains and upholsteries, organic décor products are very popular among Americans. Available in any color and at any price point, these items are non-toxic and are sold in huge quantities.
  • Dual-Flushing Toilets: Given the world’s general shortage of clean drinking water, conserving water is a major concern worldwide. To combat water shortages, the dual-flushing toilet was introduced into the market. Unlike a traditional toilet, which is very wasteful when it comes to water, this toilet has two flushing options: a short or long flush. What could be better than conserving water just by doing something you do every day anyway?
  • Green Electronics: The green electronics concept has taken off (from refrigerators to garage door openers), primarily because of the advancements in energy-efficient products that make it easy for the average American to save money on their electricity bill. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) implemented the Energy Star rating program to identify devices and electronic gadgets for the home that provide substantial savings to consumers. The 17th annual DOE rankings of green electronics companies carries with it an overhaul of its methods, new companies on the top 15 list, and a new winner at the pinnacle: Hewlett-Packard. HP took the title in part due to their sustainable paper techniques and greenhouse gas disclosures. They earned three out of three points in both of these categories.
New to the list, yet sitting dead last, is the maker of the Blackberry, RIM. The company scored at or near the bottom in all but two categories: practices for avoiding conflict minerals during production and emissions disclosure.
