I have tried a lot of skin care and beauty products from The Body Shop over the years. Most smell great and leave your skin feeling good and looking fresh, but does The Body Shop’s Seaweed Mattifying Day Cream follow suit?

The cream has a fairly thick consistency which almost melts onto the skin without a trace in just a few seconds. It spreads really well and evenly, and a little goes a long way, soaking up excess oils and taking away shine. It leaves a slight sticky/clammy residue if you apply too much, so try not to be too liberal when applying.

On first thoughts, The Body Shop’s Seaweed Mattifying Day Cream is alright, but definitely doesn’t compare to L’Occitane’s Angelica Ultra Matte Fluid or the Red Rice Ultra Matte Fluid. It doesn’t dry as quickly or soak up as much oil, but it does smell a lot nicer. The seaweed range smells incredibly fresh and not at all like seaweed. It’s difficult to describe the smell, but it’s not too dissimilar from Crabtree & Evelyn’s La Source range, which I really like. That in itself makes this a great go-to moisturiser, but the longevity of an oil-free face is important too. This one didn’t work too well for me.

The mattifying claim is a little far-fetched, in my opinion, especially for use in the summer months when my skin is more oily. Any matte result lasted for a couple of minutes at most before my T-zone started looking shiny. Within half an hour I could feel my nose starting to get a little greasy. This is accelerated if I use foundation, but reapplication of the day cream does help absorb excess oils. In winter, the matte effect does last longer, so this might be a good moisturiser for me to use in the colder months.

I’m not sure I would buy The Body Shop’s Seaweed Mattifying Day Cream again. It’s very light, but I think I need something more heavy duty. It’s £10 for a 50ml pot, but I bought this during one of The Body Shop’s many discount events for half the price, so it’s not too bad. Just don’t expect too much if you have very oily skin, and avoid if you have dry skin!
