The Big Fat Myth

What are some of your low-fat favorites?  Skinless chicken breasts?  Lean beef? Lean pork?

Some of the Food Nazis will say, “Saturated fat is of the devil!”  Surprisingly though,  Food Nazis will ignore the credible research contradicting their own claims.  The results become the mantra: “Don’t confuse me with the facts!  My mind is already made up!”  Is that good research to the masses and doesn’t this just confuse the sincere truth-seekers more?

As a curious independent researcher, I started to ask “Is saturated fat really the bad guy the media claims it is?”

Stop Being So Curious!

I decided to research after reading about the vegetarianism and the rebuttal of the China Study by Denise Minger.  My research also lead to the excellent article on “The Myths of Vegetarianism.”

After devouring both material, I went to the library to see if I could find anything about fat itself.  I was pleasantly surprised at what I found.

Oui!  Oui!

I actually found two gems when I was sniffing around for more evidence:

Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon and Mary Enig

The other one is:

The Fat Fallacy by Dr. Will Cower

The Fat Fallacy is the one I am the most curious about.  Read from the back of the book this excerpt:

Croissants. Brioche. Brie. To the American palate, these foods are fattening and oftentimes “forbidden.” Yet they are the regular staples of the French diet. And though almost half of all Americans are overweight, France’s obesity rate is at a low eight percent, while the French also boast fewer cases of stroke and heart disease. It’s clear that America’s obsession with low-fat and fat-free foods has ultimately failed. (Bold emphasis mine)

Hmmm… maybe it’s time for me to become a French man.

How about you?

What is your thoughts on saturated fat?  Are you avoiding it?  If so, why?
