Ah, Devon. The cream of the English Countryside and located South West of England. It is somewhere that most people want to retire to, but it’s also a top tourist destination with some truly top class hotels. While I have not stayed in every hotel in Devon I have stayed in quite a few of them. I have personally stayed in each and every one of these ten hotels I am about to mention so can personally testify on their quality…
The Devon Hotel, Old Matford Ln, Exeter

This small looking hotel (it has a lot more rooms than you would first think) is exactly what you might expect from a hotel in Devon. Its cosy, inviting and feels like a home away from home. All the rooms are nice and clean and more importantly, the food is top-notch. But it’s the happy, friendly staff that makes me want to move into this hotel, let alone stay for another night.

While some will hate me for putting this chain run hotel into this list it is still one of the best hotels, especially in central Exeter. It has all you need with large, clean rooms, great prices and the convenience of being centrally located. If you plan you spend a lot of time in or around Exeter, this is the perfect location to do it from.

While some of the rooms here are a little too old for their own good I does kind of add to the charm of it. With nice views overlooking the gardens, nice staff and nice food this pleasant hotel is perfect for those who want to see both North and South Devon thanks to its almost central point.

Sure, this is yet another chain based hotel, but it is also one that offers a touch of contemporary lodging within the busy city of Plymouth. With loads of parking, very affordable rooms and a pretty decent breakfast in the morning, this is my goto hotel whenever I am working in or simply enjoying the great city of Plymouth.
Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel, Southernhay East, Exeter

While this hotel is not the cheapest it does offer some upmarket lodging with friendly service staff who make everyone feel like they are the most important person in the hotel. While I have to say the food isn’t up to much I did enjoy the central leafy location and the facilities which include both a pool and a jacuzzi to name just a few!

If you want luxury this is the place to stay. This 13th-century thatched manor house is a polished looking hotel that also offers modern facilities and services. With amazing food, great views and even a real log fire to come back to during those cold winter nights. This is one hotel that might have to pay you just to leave!
Admirals Table, Dunball, Bridgwater

I’m not going to lie, the Admirals Table can be a little hit and miss when it comes to their food, but with room prices lower than you might think and each room clean and comfortable you kind of get what you pay for here. But do take my advice and stay here, but maybe eat elsewhere.
Sidmouth Harbour Hotel, Manor Rd, Devon

If you just want a nice room with amazing views located in a hotel that offers spas and relaxation treatments this is the one for you. It’s a Victorian seaside hotel that probably hasn’t changed that much since it was first built and while the signs of age do show in some of the rooms they are always clean and tidy. If you simply want to unwide the Sidmouth Harbour Hotel is perfect.
Elfordleigh, Larch Grove, Plymouth

This is the kind of hotel you stay in for one night and want your wedding reception in the next. With clean modern rooms all converted from a country home it has a golf course as well as a rather nice dining experience. I will say that these days some of the rooms are a little dated, but mostly they are all comfortable and cosy. What I love most about the Elfordleigh is that it costs far less to stay the night than you could possibly imagine.

While this hotel won’t be to everyone’s tastes as a small family of 3 it was perfect for us in the summer of last year. With very simple rooms and a relaxed, family-friendly vibe you can’t help but feel at home here. While some of the food has not been the best based on several stays here the staff are friendly and quick to deal with any niggles you might have with it. Plus it’s very affordable which in such a remote location is refreshing.
