Whether you’re planning your first visit or returning to uncover more hidden gems, these highlights promise to inspire and amaze. Let’s embark on an unforgettable adventure through the land of the long white cloud!

Translucent sea creatures

Once thought to be a myth of fishermen all over the New Zealand fishing sectors, this amazing fish is not only the world’s largest see-through fish breed but it also only lives in an area of 20 square miles just off the coast of New Zealand! Very strange indeed.

The Weta Cave

With lots of films being made in the beautiful surroundings of New Zealand, it goes without saying that there are a few movie based things to see and do. But I picked the Weta cave out because if you are a fan of films like Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit you will actually see the work being done inside creative the miniature models used in the films! Well, I liked it and final cave museum is strange enough to make this top 10 for sure.

The Futuro House

No need for you to ask why this made the list! This UFO inspired house called “Futuro” was actually supposed to represent the future of ski chalets, and I would imagine back in 1968 when it was made by Matti Suuronen they really believed it would do as well.

The second-longest place-name in the world

Called “Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu” it is often thought to be the Worlds longest place-name, this is, in fact, the 2nd (still a good claim to fame) and the name literally means: “The hill of the flute playing by Tamatea who was blown hither from afar, had a slit “Man Bit”, grazed his knees climbing mountains, fell on the earth, and encircled the land to his beloved.” Doesn’t get any stranger than that!!!

Leaning Tower of Wanaka

This amazing tower is not quite as majestic as some other ones, but because it is part of the amazing Puzzling World theme park it gets my crazy vote. It is often voted number 1 Weirdest Tourist Attractions in the entire world! Quite a claim to fame indeed.

Moeraki Boulders

Sadly the local call them the “giants’ gobstoppers”, but that takes away all that is amazing about these incredible ancient rock formations that date back more than 60 million years! Some weigh as much as seven tonnes and it is said to be the remains of eel baskets.

Giant Sequoia

While looking at giant trees is not everyone’s cup of tea, these are something very special indeed. They are called, “Giant Sequoias” and they really are “GIANT” with some of them being well over 300ft tall and a mind-blowing 56ft thick!!! Strange, or just simply amazing?!

McDonald’s inside a Douglas DC-3

When it comes to the world’s strangest McDonald’s restaurants this one has to rank right up there indeed.  This is an entire restaurant and 40 seaters eat in, all inside a Douglas DC3! Very strange indeed, but also very, very cool!

Yellow Treehouse Restaurant

Ever fancied having a sandwich in your own tree house? Well, how about a full-on dinner in one of the world’s biggest tree houses? Well, believe it or not, there is an entire restaurant inside a tree house over in Auckland! Would I eat here? You bet I would!

Waiotapu

Without the single shadow of the doubt the strangest thing to see just about anywhere! With a beautiful, rich, ring of colours created by the constant natural mixing of silicate minerals and sediment from heavy metal sulphides. And it creates the brightest of oranges and reds to create something very strange, but yet truly amazing as well.

New Zealand’s diverse landscapes and unique attractions make it a dream destination for travelers seeking beauty and adventure.
