This week we are all about health again…

Oil of Oregano is an amazing natural healing herb, that can treat many things from cold symptoms to cleaning your teeth.

Home remedies web says this about Oregano oil:

Numerous university studies have shown that Oil of Oregano is a highly potent purifier that provides many benefits for human health. It is a natural substance that is extracted from wild oregano plants, and two key compounds found in it are carvacrol and thymol. Studies have shown that both of these compounds have significant effects on harmful micro-organisms that cause many illnesses in humans.

It is important not to confuse Oil of Oregano with common oregano that is used as a spice for cooking. Common oregano is typically Origanum Marjoram, while Oil of Oregano is derived from Origanum Vulgare.

Oil of Oregano can be purchased as either a liquid or as capsules/tablets. In both forms, it is important to verify that the oil is derived from the proper potent oregano plant, and that the carvacrol concentration is at least 70%.

I prefer to buy them in the capsules, but my friend Kat says she just dissolves hers by putting three drops in her orange juice in the morning. I take a capsule if I feel a cold coming on and once a day after for about 3 days, to be sure I am not going to get a cold.  My biggest problem is remembering to take them.  :)

I was at the tat shop today and somehow we got on the topic of Oregano oil again and Kat says that she uses it to whiten her teeth. Put three drops on your toothbrush and brush for about a minute and a half to two minutes. It gets a little hot, but your teeth will feel amazingly smooth and clean and apparently it has whitening effects.

I can’t use the white strips you buy in the store because my teeth are just too sensitive, and unfortunately I haven’t been able to go to a dentist for at least 5 years. So other than flossing every day which I really try to do, this is an amazing addition to my oral health. I have done one day of it and feel amazingly better, I will let you know about the whitening effects in a couple of days. So far with the way it feels, I am thinking this could definitely be a great addition to my beauty regimen.

Oiloforegano.com has this info:

From the Greek language, ‘oregano’ means a “mountain of joy”. Oregano is used by Hippocrates for curing a variety of diseases from digestive disorders to respiratory diseases. Due to different climate, soil and rainfall, not all oregano are created equal. Therefore, it is important that the carvacrol is the primary component and not thymol when buying oregano oil. High tymol concentrations are not suitable for internal consumption. Carvacrol is a natural phenol that has strong anti-microbial activity.

Oil of oregano helps to prevent infections and cure skin fungi such as athlete’s foot. It can also help to eliminate lice infestations and intestinal worms. Oil of oregano can be used externally as strong analgesic and anti-rheumatic agent. Diluted oil of oregano can even be applied on a toothache to relieve pain.

It is also beneficial for respiratory ailments as oil of oregano is used to treat lung conditions, bronchitis, sinusitis and cold symptoms like cough. It has also been used to induce menstruation during early nineteenth century by physicians.

So now that you know more about this wonderful plant, do some research before you buy one. Dr. Cass Ingram, an expert on oregano essential oil states, “true oregano grows only under specific soil and climate conditions and cannot be reproduced in your backyard.”

If you have purchased the essential oil of oregano, take note that it is of the highest concentration and you need to dilute it with carrier oil before using it. Using oil of oregano will reduce iron absorption so consume the oil at least two hours before or after taking iron supplements. As with any type of medication, it pays to read the instructions when you are new to using the oil of oregano.
