The Steelers have signed veteran center Fernando Velasco to a one-year contract to take the place of injured Maurkice Pouncey.
Velasco started 16 games last season for the Tennessee Titans, 13 at center and three at left guard. However, the Titans signed center Rob Turner in free agency and drafted another on the fourth round this year and released Velasco.
Velasco joined the Titans as an undrafted rookie in 2009 from Georgia. He is 28 years old.
Although the Steelers have not yet announced any signings, agent Brian Ayrault confirmed Velasco has joined the team. The Post-Gazette earlier reported that halfback Jonathan Dwyer would re-sign with them and Dwyer remarked on Twitter this afternoon "Glad to be back home #steelernation." Pouncey will have surgery to repair a torn MCL and ACL. Dwyer will take the roster spot of LaRod Stephens-Howling, who has a torn ACL.
The Steelers still must make a move to replace linebacker Larry Foote, who has a torn biceps muscle.
