Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Monday that linebacker Sean Spence has been given “a clean bill of health.”
“We can’t wait to watch him take the next step in this process,” Tomlin said Monday, per ESPN.com, “which is play football.”
Spence, a third-round draft pick in 2012, hasn’t played since suffering a career-threatening knee injury in the Steelers’ final preseason game his rookie season.
Spence is working out with his teammates in the Steelers’ offseason program, and could figure into the team’s plans this season.
“I’m not going to assume he’s starting from ground zero,” Tomlin said. “These haven’t been empty days for him since he’s been here in terms of the rehabilitation process and what’s he’s been able to do in terms of learning our system.”
Tomlin also said Monday that the team has not ruled out bringing back veteran defensive end Brett Keisel for one more season.
The 12-year pro remains unsigned while the Steelers search for a replacement in the draft.
“Obviously it’s incomplete,” he said of the defensive end position. “We’ve lost more than we’ve added. We’ll rectify that.”
I hope Spence gets another shot, that injury was pretty horrific. If he wasn't getting the best of care I'm sure he'd be limping for the rest of his life.
