“Signora” – Maturing with Style

By Reasonstodress

I've mentioned before here that I'm going through a bit of a phase. Well, actually, "phase" would imply that this will pass, however, it's not going to pass because it's called "aging". So you could say I'm not going through a phase at all actually, I'm just aging! And I want to do it somewhat gracefully!

That doesn't mean that I'm not going to wear rompers, it just means that I love turning into a 35 year old woman!

CRAZY.

I'm 35 this year, how did this happen? And thank God it did!

In Italy, when you are a woman and married they refer to you as a "" - ., it is very strange to hear people call me "Signora", I always look over my shoulder to make sure they're speaking to me. As much as I love a good fashion trend, one of the things I've noticed about my style lately is that I also despise them! If I notice a certain shoe style (like this trend from this post), becoming too popular, I avoid it like the plague.

That's not to say I hate all trends, I'm loving lace this season, like this white lace cardigan bought on sale for 40 euros (down from 80) and these vintage 60s culottes bought for under 3 euro!

The beauty of clothing is that it changes daily, which is perfect since I'm still not able to commit to a certain style. Changing your clothes each day is like changing the character you want to play in life. There are just certain characters I avoid now, for example, my fluorescent yellow hightops from a few (9!) years ago haven't been worn in, well.... years! Whereas, clothes that make me feel polished and lady-like are in constant rotation.

The Reason I Dressed

Here we are in Italy's largest indoor Butterfly House in Cervia, I've written a post about this fantastic spot for kids along with the Nature Park and Adventure Parks nearby immersed in the area's ancient Maritime Pine forest.

Our day consisted of a morning of sightseeing along Cervia's port, lunch in a famous spot (review coming soon!), the early afternoon at the Butterfly House and an evening walk and dinner out in Cesenatico.

My Style for the Day

Because I knew we'd be walking quite a bit I wanted comfortable shoes, but I also wanted shoes that would elongate my legs because as much as I love culottes I also find that they shorten my body. At 150 cm (4'11") I can't exactly afford to be shortened, so I wore my Sarah Summer espadrilles wedges in suede. This is a brand famous for their high quality wedges in Europe, they are comfortable enough to walk around in all day but give some good height!

Because of my new found love of "dressing maturely" (sometimes) I paired them with a white t-shirt, culottes and a white lace open-front cardigan. White lace is one of my favorite summer trends this year, I've written about it here and specifically about the white lace jacket trend here.

Perhaps one of the MOST noticeable changes I've made to my style recently is my hair! I haven't cut my hair in something like 15 YEARS! But it was time for a change and a dramatic change at that. I was really worried that short hair would age me, but I've never felt so good. Mature.... but good just the same.

For now go ahead and call me "Signora", the next you do I'll answer instead of wondering who you're speaking to.
