Shopkick Review: A Phone App With Rewards

By Girlratesworld @girlratesworld

Reviewing the shopkick phone app today. Shopkick is an app that gives you points for going to your favorite stores. This app does not require you to buy anything. Not only can you get points for going to stores, but it also for scanning certain items in the store. Redeem those points for a gift card once you have enough points. There are gift card offerings from several merchants including Target and Starbucks.  Video Included too!

hooray. . .free points!

The great thing about the shopkick app is quite obvious…You don’t have to purchase anything to get rewarded! Not like the ibotta app review from a few weeks ago. The points are free.

shopkick rewards.

But there’s a but (isn’t it always). Once you have enough points, the rewards are kinda mediocre. For example, to receive a $2 gift card from Target you must have at least 2500 points. Eh…It’s do-able. Each scan averages between 25 and 35 points. There are some stores that offer the “walk in points” too. But you can be collecting points for weeks and weeks before cashing out.

Walk-in points allow you get points for simply going into a store. Not all stores offer this incentive. But it’s still pretty cool to know you can get rewarded just for arriving…”

scan vs buy.

If you’re a patient person and don’t mind going stores scanning items then check out Shopkick. It will be great for you. I’d say it’s also good for people who go to stores multiple times a week. I just prefer the ibotta app over this shopkick. I feel I can get better benefits for the effort I’m putting in. But… Then again I have to buy something to actually get money back when I use ibotta.

shopkick vs ibotta.

So what it boils down to is what you feel more comfortable using. Prefer to get points for going to stores and scanning items? Go shopkick. Or do you prefer buying things that you have to buy anyway and getting a percentage of the cost back? Go ibotta.

Let me know in the comments below if you have tried any of these apps. Also tell me the success (or failures) you’ve had using iphone and android apps with rewards. Until our next review…check me out on twitter and facebook.
