Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race 2012 – Day 3 Upates

By Abichal @Multidays

The Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race 2012 is in its 4th day. This event is the longest certified footrace in the world and has been taking place since 1996 when it began as the 2700 mile race and in 1997 became the 3100. The event takes place on a .54 mile loop around Thomas Edison High School in Jamaica, Queens. The surface is concrete and about one third of the course has shade. The runners begin at 6 am and run until 12 midnight when the course closes and the runners return to their local accomodation and rest for a few hours. The 12 runners in this years race have 52 days to complete the distance and this year for the first time there are no women runners as Surasa Mairer was forced to pull out due to injury just before the race began.

Amazingly some of the runners maintain blogs throughout the race and there is a widget with links to the runners blogs on the front page of multidays.com (and below) to the race narrator Utpal Marshall, whose blog Perfection-Journey features daily interviews and stories with the runners throughout the event providing insight into the lives of the ultrarunners and the race crew.

The race website also provides some background information on the runners, the race and the organisers who were inspired by the race founder, Sri Chinmoy, an athlete himself who saw the inner and outer significance of running and especially ultrarunning.

After three days, Vasu Duzhiy leads in his first time running this race. His 10 mile lead over second placed Pushkar Mullauer indicates a great start as the runners settle into the rhythm of the race and acclimatise to the New York conditions. 49 days to go.
