So How Is It Different From Other Treatments?
Sure, there’s a wide variety of body contouring treatments available in the market – I’ve stepped into a cryo chamber (with fluffy Ugg boots and all) for cryo-induced cooling, tried to freeze them thunder thighs off and tried high-intensity focused ultrasound (holymama, that was totes a one-off. Let’s just say my pain threshold is about the height of a sheet of paper on the floor instead).
UltraShape® uses sound waves that are tuned at frequencies that specifically target fat cells, avoiding the muscles, veins, arteries etc. This targeted treatment (in my own words) is something like dogs – they are attuned to a certain frequency and therefore can react. Similarly, the fat cells react (by being destroyed) to these wavelengths, thus keeping the other parts / components of the body intact. Once these fat cells are busted, they are broken down and flushed out of your system lymphatically – just ensure that you get plenty of fluids to help the system flush them out, and also massage the treated area to help promote circulation and flow.
The Treatment Area: The Thighs
The Logistics: There was the prerequisite measurements, photo-taking, and weight taking. The staff would also mark out the outline of the area to be treated to ensure consistency during subsequent treatments.
1) The Pre-treatment: After being strapped in (yes, I know it’s not a pretty sight, but hey, that’s why I’m exercising and doing this treatment right?), first up is a RF (radiofrequency) treatment to “warm up” your fats. It’s kind of like your warm-up session before any workout really. As you can see from my very gleeful face, there’s no pain at all – there’s only a slight warming / heating sensation.

2) The Treatment: There’s really nothing much to it – all I had to do was lie there in comfort. The strapping can get a little tight at times – but this is necessary in order to compact the fat and make for a better treatment mass. Doctor Kim will calibrate the device, which will then in turn mark out the spots to be treated. Everything was literally in his expert hands – it’s not just anyone who can do it. Yes, it may seem to be a simple task of moving the device transducer to fit the red spots marked out by the device, but according to the good doctor, you needed to know how much pressure to exert, and to make sure the transducer was placed on parallel to the skin’s surface, etc.
How It Felt: There’s not much sensation to be honest – all I felt was the device transducer gliding around the thighs (over a gel). It was only towards the end when there was some slight warmth, but it was pretty much negligible. In fact, I could have fallen asleep any time during this portion of the treatment. Now I’m someone who’s rather sensitive to sound, so with each shot, I could hear some very high-pitched buzzing in the ears. Other than that, there was not much discomfort at all – no pain at all, yay! Because of the relatively large surface area of the thighs to be treated, the entire session takes about 2 hours or so. Treatment duration depends on the area, so some might require less time.
3) The Post-treatment: A staff would then apply a device transducer to “suction” the area – A crude comparison would be something like a vacuum transducer, and presumably to help encourage circulation in the area. There’s not much pain here either.
And that’s it! There’s really no downtime to this treatment – I was up and ready to leave (but not before having a relaxing cuppa at one of their waiting rooms. I love Aeon’s interior decor and how they somehow manage to schedule it so that at any one time, you’re the only person in the waiting room). Over the next few days, there really wasn’t any sensation at all – no soreness, nothing. I did experience some very slight bruising though, but note that it’s because I have tofu skin and I bruise extremely easily.

Any Special Requirements: Well, all you have to do is to get out there and be more active – I found myself walking home more often, (about 2-3km), and drinking lots of water. Of course, it would be more beneficial if you could throw in a few more workout sessions, but if you could hit your 10,000 step daily count and cut back on unhealthy food (read: deep fried, sugary, carb-heavy etc.), you can see better results~! Most importantly – stay hydrated and get enough rest so that your body is able to break down and flush out the fats.
