Information about the Department
Université Laval (www.ulaval.ca) is one of the ten largest research universities in Canada, with more than 45,000 students. It is located in Quebec City, a UNESCO World Heritage City, with one of the highest qualities of life in North America. The Department of Geomatics Sciences (www.scg.ulaval.ca) consists of 16 full-time professors, more than 270 undergraduate students (future engineers and land-surveyors), and about 70 graduate students (M.Sc. and Ph.D.). It offers 9 training programs in Geomatics, some unique in Canada, which are certified by Professional associations (Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec and Ordre des arpenteurs-géomètres du Québec).
The Department’s research activities are coordinated primarily through the Centre for Research in Geomatics – CRG (www.crg.ulaval.ca), recognized for its leadership and multidisciplinarity. Members of the Department created GEOIDE, a Canadian Network of Centres of Excellence in geomatics and Quebec’s newly established innovation network in convergence of geospatial intelligence (www.convergence.ulaval.ca). The Department of Geomatics Sciences also encompasses other important initiatives in research such as the Canada Research Chair in Cognitive Geomatics, the Geospatial Augmented Reality laboratory, the Ge@design laboratory, and the laboratory for the Exploration of Media Immersion for Rehabilitation. As well, the Department maintains a laboratory of metrology-geodesy, unique in Canada.
Description of the Position
The Department of Geomatics Sciences at Université Laval is seeking to fill a tenure-track academic position in High Precision Measurement and Surveying Engineering that requires knowledge in topographic surveying, metrology and geodetic engineering. More specifically, we seek expertise in new 3D laser scanning techniques such as terrestrial LiDAR, data acquisition and integration from a variety of sensors, indoor positioning and navigation, and the verification and calibration of measurement and surveying instruments.
The successful candidate must maintain and improve teaching and research in the fundamental sciences that support land surveying and geomatics engineering, with a particular focus on topographic surveying, metrology and geodetic engineering, as well as ensure appropriate expertise in related areas. The candidate will also be expected to demonstrate innovative research in application domains of significant added value such as the monitoring of engineering structures, the measurement of underground constructions, industrial measurement and the establishment and monitoring of high precision infrastructures. Moreover, the candidate will be responsible for maintaining and improving the activities of the metrology-geodesy laboratory which offers verification and calibration of measurement and survey instruments to the community at large, and thereby enhance the use of equipment currently in place (a laser interferometer, calibration benches for surveying, rods, tapes and other distance-measuring equipment, optical collimator and geodetic calibration baselines, etc.).
The successful candidate will teach regular classes at the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels, and perform leading-edge research regarding high precision measurement and surveying engineering. He/she will also need to supervise students at all three levels, and develop the means to obtain his/her own research funding, including the development of public and private partnerships. He/she will also need to demonstrate openness to multidisciplinary collaboration.
Finally, the candidate will participate in the departmental activities and in those of the Centre for Research in Geomatics (CRG), the Faculty and the University. Potentially, he/she could be called upon to teach and perform research outside of his/her area of expertise, i.e., in the other disciplines in Geomatics in which the Department is involved.
Requisite qualifications
Persons interested in applying for the position must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline. They must have leading-edge knowledge in the basic sciences related to the position. Postdoctoral training or equivalent practical experience is desirable. Candidacies will be evaluated with regard to the three major university functions (teaching, research and supervision of students), the candidate’s leadership skills and ability to administer projects, and commitment to the scientific community and other relevant communities.
A career profile making the candidate eligible for admission to one of Quebec’s professional engineering associations (Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec or Ordre des arpenteurs-géomètres du Québec) is required. Since French is the language of teaching at Université Laval, the candidate must be able to teach in that language by the end of a one-year period. Knowledge of English is also required.
Salary and working conditions
Based on the experience of the person and according to the collective agreement in force.
