I think we have almost gotten rid of the old and are slowly but surely introducing the new to our back garden. We went and brought round timber posts and wire fencing, pond liner and some plants over the last two weeks. The amount of money I have to raise for the garden is constantly rising, but then I did get a chance to sell some unwanted items and some plants at the local table top sale and made £41 profit.
Let me start by telling you about our fence, we went for something simple to erect, affordable and it even provides a space-saving frame-work for me to grow up climbing vegetables such as beans, cucumbers and squashed. All its missing is a little picket gate which is currently on its way.
As you might have seen in my previous post we have purchased some native aquatic plants for our pond. Steve has also added some ferns and foxgloves courtesy of parents in laws garden. We both can’t wait for the beneficial wildlife to move in.
The pond takes up the top left hand corner of my growing area and our apple tree is situated just to the bottom left. As a boundary to my vegetable growing area I decided to plant herbs and am intending to add perennial vegetables such as french sorrel later on as to not constantly disturb the roots of the apple tree. To supply us with some fresh herbs now I decided to buy the following:
Rosemary, Oregano, Fennel, Lemon balm, Marjoram and Sage
With the fence up I could finally get on with digging up the rest of the lawn. I moved the Narcissus that had grown through the lawn to the gap in between the wall and fence. In the areas that I wont be growing vegetables I will plant natives. I find they always look so beautiful in the Devon hedgerows so why not in our garden. I’m also going to grow cut flowers, I simply have a soft spot for bringing my own cut flowers in from the garden, It fills my heart with just as much joy as cooking my homegrown fruit & veg.
I guess whats left to say is that the radical transformation is sort of complete, a garden will always evolve and I could keep writing posts about the transformation. But I much rather focus on posting about individual crops, plants and projects and give you monthly updates on making our garden pay for itself.
