We all have days where we just don’t feel like doing anything. Then there are days that we tackle all of the easiest tasks first, leaving no time for the larger projects.
We justify those days by telling ourselves that we did accomplish something.
I know! I know.
I have always struggled with procrastination, but here are three tips that have worked wonders for me:
1.) Condition your brain for productivity.
The best $20 I ever spent was on a pair of earmuff headphones. When I need to seriously work, I pull up a white noise video on YouTube and listen to that.
When I have my headphones on and this sound is playing, something in my brain triggers that it’s time to get work done. I don’t diddle around with Facebook, email, or surfing.
It gets done.
Establish a signal that tells your brain it’s work time and go, baby, go!
2. Know what your limits are.
I find that I procrastinate more when my workload seems overwhelming.
Of course, you’re going to put off a task if it feels like you’re trying to move GPS heavy machinery by yourself!
Break down your big projects into sections, or ask for help if you need it. Try not to take on more than you know you can comfortably handle, if at all possible.
3. Set boundaries.
If you work from home, you know how hard it can be to separate work time from family time. However, letting your work spill over into your personal time can cause you to burn out and resent what you do.
This will make you procrastinate habitually because you’d rather be doing something else. Set yourself solid hours and quit at quitting time.
Go enjoy life a little. Whatever’s left will wait until tomorrow.
You’re much more likely to actually tackle the task if you’re rested and balanced than if you feel like you only live to work.
