"Pittsburgh Penguins winger Beau Bennett is learning the hard way that potential means nothing if you can't stay on the ice.
The 22-year-old who has entered the 2014-15 season as a breakout candidate for the Penguins suffered an apparent left knee injury in Friday's practice.
Bennett fell to the ice while clutching his left knee during a three-on-three scrimmage, according to the Pittsburgh-Tribune Review. Coach Mike Johnston told reporters that Kasperi Kapanen's skate clipped Bennett's, causing him to fall "awkwardly."
"Early indications seem that it wasn't as bad as it looked," Johnston said. "We will have another update later this afternoon."
The Penguins tweeted Friday afternoon that Bennett was "undergoing further testing" and that there would be an update Saturday.

Sidney Crosby, Penguins face plenty of change
Last season, Bennett had three goals and seven points in 21 regular-season games, with six more points during 12 playoff games.
With James Neal traded to the Nashville Predators, there is an opportunity for Bennett to stake a larger role in the offense with Johnston as coach. Bennett was off to a strong start, recording a goal and an assist during two preseason games, during which he's averaged 20:27 of ice time.
Bennett, entering his third season in the NHL, has played just 47 games in his career. He's been hobbled by injuries, most recently dealing with a wrist injury before having surgery May 22. The Penguins' 20th-overall pick in the 2010 draft missed 50 games last season after his second wrist surgery.
• Forwards Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz will play in their first preseason game Saturday, Johnston announced after practice. Pascal Dupuis (knee) and Evgeni Malkin (undisclosed) will not be in the lineup."
