The Penguins are keeping Olli Maatta, general manager Ray Shero said Thursday.
Maatta, 19, will remain with the team instead of being returned to his junior club, the London Knights. The Tribune-Review first reported this decision on Sunday.
By playing in a 10th NHL game on Friday against the New York Islanders at home, Maatta will have this season count as the first of his entry level contract. He cannot play in more than 39 games this season or his clock will start towards arbitration and unrestricted free agency.
In another roster development, the Penguins placed right winger Beau Bennett on injured reserve retroactive to Oct. 12. Forward Jayson Menga was recalled from Wilkes-Barre in the AHL.
