Notable Green Initiatives More Colleges Should Implement

These days, it’s hard to ignore the detrimental impact our actions are having on the planet. From carbon emissions to excessive waste, we are actively playing a role in environmental concerns such as climate change and deforestation and the evidence is everywhere. In an effort to slow and possibly even reverse the damage, various institutions, corporations and entities are implementing new, sustainable programs and initiatives.

Not oblivious to the trend, colleges and universities are beginning to introduce eco-friendly, proactive plans and campaigns across campuses, in an effort to get the next generation of leaders involved. Turning environmentalism into a collective, fun responsibility, schools are educating and informing students through hands-on activities. Some notable initiatives already implemented across the country are highlighted below and other campuses should take note.

The University of Mississippi

The University of Mississippi has implemented several green initiatives to promote sustainability. Among them, is the school’s Green Cup Competition. Competition is something students sometimes respond to all too well, so playing into that, this initiative pitted student organizations—specifically Greek organizations—against each other as they worked to make the world a little greener than before.

Activities included everything from the creation of informative presentations on eco-awareness, to participation and coordination of eco-projects, as well as incentives to track efficient transportation practices such as carpooling, biking, etc. Each activity was worth a certain amount of points, with the overall winner claiming the title of “Greenest Fraternity” “Greenest Sorority” or “Greenest Residence Hall.”

By making it more of a sport and game, the campus was able to get students excited about leading greener, more eco-friendly lifestyles that will hopefully transcend the length of the project.

George Washington University

As a green initiative at George Washington University, students were given the option of signing a Green Graduation Pledge, promising to make greener, more efficient practices a part of their lives forever—rather than just the limited time they are in school.

From promising to utilize public transportation to only using environmentally friendly office supplies, the pledge includes a long list of “green” habits for students to keep in mind as they venture out into the real world. The school even boasts a Green Alumni Network to keep eco-conscious students connected long after they graduate.

The great thing about this program is that it makes the issue about more than environmentalism, it makes it about accountability and conscious actions. It helps highlight the fact that students are faced with choices EVERY DAY that influence our earth, so it’s important for them to be mindful.

Colorado State University

Doing their part to promote sustainability, Colorado State University implemented the Green Warrior Campaign, to get students working toward a greener tomorrow. Similar to the other initiatives, this campaign placed the responsibility in the students’ hands, emphasizing the impact of their actions.

Throughout the semester, students tracked their conservation efforts such as energy and water use and, of course, recycling. Still a new program, it is quickly gaining momentum across campus, as more students are making the decision to live greener lives.

Programs like these instill many values in students. They teach responsibility, accountability, compassion and understanding—all while instilling a love for this great planet. If every campus across the world took the time to develop just ONE program like these, the results would be amazing.
